Orchid Fertilizer Guide: What, When, and How Much to Feed
Fertilising orchids is often either completely ignored — "it comes with fertiliser spikes, I'm done" — or dramatically overdone in the belief that more nutrients equal faster growth. Neither approach produces the best results. The right approach is simpler than most guides suggest: small amounts, frequently, with a monthly flush to keep the medium clean.
This guide explains the science behind orchid nutrition, the practical weakly-weekly method, seasonal schedule adjustments, and when bloom booster fertilisers actually help versus when they are marketing fluff.
What Orchids Need From Fertilizer
Like all plants, orchids need the three primary macronutrients — nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) — plus a range of secondary nutrients and trace minerals. The NPK ratio on a fertiliser package describes the percentage of each macronutrient by weight:

The Best Fertilizer for Orchids: What to Buy
The orchid fertiliser industry is full of expensive branded products claiming special formulations. Most are unnecessary. The most trusted choice among experienced growers:
Balanced NPK (20-20-20 or 10-10-10)
A balanced fertiliser with equal ratios of N, P, and K is the best all-around choice for orchids during the growing season. Dilute to quarter of the package recommendation — so if the package says "1 teaspoon per litre," use ¼ teaspoon per litre.
Common readily available options: Miracle-Gro All Purpose (20-20-20), Peters Professional (20-20-20), Dyna-Gro Foliage-Pro (9-3-6 — also widely used, naturally urea-free). Any of these work excellently.
What "Urea-Free" Means
Some orchid-specific fertilisers advertise "urea-free" on the label. Urea (a common nitrogen source in fertilisers) requires soil microbes to convert it into usable ammonium and nitrate — a process that happens efficiently in potting soil but is slower in bark. Urea-free fertilisers use immediately available nitrogen forms (ammoniacal nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen), which orchids can absorb directly through their velamen roots. For orchids in bark, urea-free is slightly better; in practice, bark does have some microbial activity and regular 20-20-20 performs adequately.
The Weakly Weekly Method
This is the fertilising approach recommended by most professional orchid growers and orchid societies worldwide:
- Prepare your fertiliser solution at one quarter the package-recommended strength. Example: If the label says 5 ml per litre, use 1.25 ml per litre.
- Fertilise every week during the active growing season (spring through summer) by applying the diluted solution during each regular watering.
- One week per month, replace the fertiliser solution with plain room-temperature water only. This monthly flush washes accumulated mineral salts out of the medium before they can build up to damaging levels.
The logic behind quarter strength: orchids in bark absorb nutrients less efficiently than plants in dense potting soil. Concentrations that benefit a rose will burn orchid roots. Low concentration, high frequency gives a steady nutrient supply without toxic build-up.
Signs of Over-Fertilizing
Excess fertiliser is more harmful than insufficient fertiliser. Watch for:
- Brown root tips: Fertiliser salt burn on tender growing root tips.
- White crust on pot rim or bark surface: Mineral salt deposits from evaporation.
- Leaf tip browning: Can indicate salt accumulation, particularly if it progresses inward over time.
- Stunted new growth: Paradoxically, fertiliser burn can slow growth rather than accelerate it.
If you see these signs, flush the medium with plain water three times in succession to leach out accumulated salts, then resume fertilising at half your previous concentration.
Seasonal Fertilising Schedule
Spring (March–May): Increase Gradually
As new growth emerges, begin the weakly weekly method at quarter strength. If your plant was dormant through winter, start at one-eighth strength for the first two weeks to avoid stressing newly awakening roots.
Summer (June–August): Full Feeding Programme
This is peak growing season. Apply balanced fertiliser weekly at quarter strength. For Dendrobiums and Oncidiums actively building pseudobulbs, you can switch to a slightly higher-nitrogen formula (such as 30-10-10) to maximise cane and pseudobulb development.
Early Autumn (September–October): Switch to Bloom Booster
As new growth matures and you approach the blooming trigger period, switch to a bloom booster fertiliser (low nitrogen, high phosphorus — such as 10-30-20) for 4–6 weeks. This is the one time a different fertiliser formulation has genuine scientific justification: higher phosphorus supports the energy-intensive process of flower bud formation.
Important: bloom booster is only relevant if your plant is approaching its blooming trigger period. Using it on a plant actively growing new leaves has no benefit and may slightly inhibit vegetative growth.
Winter (November–February): Rest Period
Reduce fertilising frequency significantly:
- Phalaenopsis: Every 2–3 weeks at quarter strength if still growing actively; skip if in cool-treatment reblooming period.
- Dendrobium (nobile type): Stop completely during the cool dry rest period.
- Oncidium: Stop during dry rest; resume when spike emerges.
- Paphiopedilum: Every 3–4 weeks at quarter strength (no true dormancy).
Should You Use Bloom Booster Fertiliser?
The honest answer: bloom boosters help a little, but other factors matter far more. An orchid receiving the correct light, temperature cycle, and watering routine will bloom reliably with plain balanced fertiliser. An orchid lacking the correct cool-night temperature trigger (for Phalaenopsis) or dry rest (for Oncidium/Dendrobium) will not bloom regardless of which fertiliser you use.
Use a bloom booster as a supplementary tool in the 4–6 weeks before blooming season, not as a substitute for correct seasonal care.
Fertilising Newly Repotted Orchids
Do not fertilise for at least 4–6 weeks after repotting. Freshly cut root ends are vulnerable to salt burn. New root tips need to develop and begin absorbing reliably before fertiliser is introduced. When you do resume, start at one-eighth strength for the first two applications.
