Orchid Care Guide: Everything You Need to Grow and Rebloom Orchids Indoors

Orchids have a reputation for being difficult — but that reputation is largely undeserved. Most of it comes from applying the wrong care logic: treating orchids like ordinary houseplants, with regular potting soil, frequent watering, and dim windowsills. Once you understand what orchids actually need — open bark media, infrequent but thorough watering, and bright indirect light — they become some of the most rewarding plants you can grow. Many varieties bloom for months, and with the right conditions, they rebloom year after year. This guide covers everything: the most common orchid types, care requirements, reblooming, fertilising, and troubleshooting the most common problems.

Types of Orchids for Indoors

There are over 28,000 species of orchids, but only a handful are widely grown as houseplants. Each has specific care requirements that differ from the others — the most important thing is to identify which orchid you have before following any care advice.

Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid)

The Phalaenopsis is by far the most common orchid sold as a houseplant — it's what most people mean when they say "my orchid." It produces arching spikes with multiple flowers (typically 5–20) that last 2–4 months. Native to Southeast Asia and northern Australia, it grows as an epiphyte on tree bark in humid rainforests. This means it does not grow in soil, and its roots need air circulation to remain healthy. Phalaenopsis is a warm grower (18–29°C) and is the most forgiving of the common orchid types. Available in white, pink, purple, yellow, orange, and bicolour patterns.

Dendrobium

Dendrobium is one of the largest orchid genera with over 1,800 species. The most commonly sold type is Dendrobium phalaenopsis hybrids (confusingly named despite being unrelated to Phalaenopsis), which produce upright spikes of flowers at the top of long canes. Many Dendrobium types require a cool, dry rest period in autumn to trigger blooming — this is a key difference from Phalaenopsis. Some types drop their leaves during dormancy; this is normal.

Oncidium (Dancing Lady)

Oncidium orchids produce dramatic, branching spikes laden with dozens of small flowers — often yellow and brown, with a distinctive lip that resembles a dancing figure. They tend to be more light-demanding than Phalaenopsis and prefer a drier rest period between waterings. Many are fragrant. The popular "Sharry Baby" cultivar smells strongly of chocolate.

Cattleya

Cattleyas and their many hybrids are the "corsage orchid" — large, dramatic flowers with a distinctive frilly lip, often fragrant. They are the most light-demanding of commonly grown orchids, requiring direct morning sun. Cattleyas are generally harder to grow indoors than Phalaenopsis but extremely rewarding when they bloom.

Paphiopedilum (Slipper Orchid)

Paphiopedilums produce distinctive pouch-shaped flowers with a trap mechanism. Unlike most houseplant orchids, they grow in the ground in leaf litter, not as epiphytes — meaning they tolerate standard potting media and prefer more moisture than bark-grown orchids. They are also among the few orchids that can tolerate lower light levels, making them good candidates for north-facing windowsills.

Light Requirements

Light is the single factor most responsible for whether an orchid reblooms indoors. Too little light and the plant survives but never flowers. Too much direct sun and leaves scorch.

Window Placement

An east- or west-facing windowsill is ideal for most orchids (especially Phalaenopsis). East windows provide gentle morning sun; west windows offer afternoon sun that is warmer but still manageable. North-facing windows generally provide insufficient light for most orchids to bloom reliably, but Paphiopedilums can manage.

South-facing windows in the northern hemisphere offer the strongest light. Phalaenopsis can be grown 1–2 m away from a south window, or directly in a south window shielded by a sheer curtain. Dendrobium and Oncidium can sit closer to a south window.

Reading Leaf Colour

Orchid leaves are excellent light meters. Healthy leaves are medium green. If leaves are dark forest green, the plant is receiving too little light — it is increasing chlorophyll to capture more. If leaves have a yellowish or reddish tinge, the plant is receiving maximum or slightly too much light — reddish leaves in Phalaenopsis are not a problem if the colour is even, but if leaves bleach white or develop dry patches, move the plant back.

Grow Lights

If natural light is insufficient, full-spectrum LED grow lights at 2,500–5,000 lux (250–500 foot-candles) run for 12–14 hours per day work well for Phalaenopsis. Higher-light types like Cattleya and Oncidium need 5,000–10,000 lux. Position the light 20–40 cm above the plant; closer positions risk burning.

Watering: The Most Critical Difference

Orchids in bark media cannot be watered the same way as soil-potted houseplants. The bark dries much faster than soil and provides essentially no nutrient value — it exists purely to provide drainage and air circulation around roots. Getting watering right is the single most important skill in orchid growing.

The Soak Method

Take the orchid pot (without the decorative outer cachepot) to the sink. Run tepid water through the bark for 15–20 seconds, ensuring it flows freely out the drainage holes. Alternatively, fill a tub with room-temperature water and submerge the pot for 15–20 minutes. Lift it out, allow it to drain fully, and return it to its spot. Never let the pot sit in standing water.

Watering Frequency

In bark media, Phalaenopsis typically need watering:

These are guidelines, not schedules. The correct trigger is when the bark feels barely damp or completely dry, and the pot feels light when lifted. Clear plastic pots let you see root colour — grey/silver roots mean dry, green roots mean moist.

Water Quality

Orchids are sensitive to the fluoride and chlorine in treated tap water. If possible, use rainwater, filtered water, or let tap water sit overnight to off-gas chlorine. Some cultivars — especially Phalaenopsis — develop brown leaf tips from fluoride accumulation. Flushing the bark with plain water once a month helps clear salt and mineral build-up.

Crown Rot

Never pour water directly into the crown of a Phalaenopsis — the point where the leaves emerge from the central stem. If water sits in the crown, it rots the growing point and kills the plant. If water gets in the crown, blot it dry with a paper towel or tilt the plant to drain.

Potting Media and Pots

Why Not Soil

Epiphytic orchids (Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Cattleya) grow on tree bark in the wild. Their roots are exposed to air, rain, and drying cycles. Regular potting soil holds too much moisture for their roots and causes them to rot within weeks. They need open, free-draining media that dries relatively quickly.

Bark Media

Medium-grade fir bark (6–12 mm pieces) is the standard potting medium for most epiphytic orchids. It provides structure, drainage, and some organic material as it breaks down. Bark media breaks down over 18–24 months — this is one reason orchids need repotting. Old, broken-down bark holds too much moisture and becomes anaerobic.

Sphagnum Moss

Sphagnum moss retains more moisture than bark and suits Phalaenopsis in dry environments or during the winter when bark dries too quickly. However, it requires more careful watering because it looks dry on the surface while still being wet underneath. Never compress sphagnum tightly around roots — pack it loosely.

The Semi-Hydro / LECA Method

Growing orchids in LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) in a cache pot with a passive water reservoir is increasingly popular. Roots sit above a small reservoir of dilute nutrient solution. The wicking action keeps roots moist but not waterlogged. Requires a transition period as the plant adjusts from bark to LECA.

Pots

Clear plastic nursery pots are the most practical choice — you can see root colour and moisture levels without disturbing the plant. Orchid roots are green (chlorophyll-containing in many species) and photosynthesize, so clear pots provide a genuine benefit. Terracotta pots dry faster, which suits Cattleya; they can stress Phalaenopsis in dry interiors. Decorative pots without drainage should only be used as cachepots — water the orchid, let it drain, then return it to the outer pot.

Humidity and Temperature

Humidity

Most houseplant orchids prefer 50–70% relative humidity. In dry heated homes (often 30–40%), brown leaf tips, shrivelling roots, and poor bloom life result. Options for raising humidity:

Avoid misting leaves directly — this encourages fungal disease, especially if water sits in the crown or between leaves overnight.

Temperature for Blooming

Phalaenopsis initiates new flower spikes when night temperatures drop to 15–18°C for 4–6 consecutive weeks. In most homes, this happens naturally in autumn when heating is reduced overnight, or by placing the plant near a cool window. Without this temperature differential, healthy Phalaenopsis plants will grow leaves but not rebloom.

Dendrobium and Oncidium types often need cooler, drier winters — even temperatures as low as 10°C at night for some types. Paphiopedilums have warm and cool-growing species; check the specific type you have.

Fertilising: The Weakly Weekly Method

Bark media provides almost no nutrients, so regular fertilising is essential. The standard approach for active growers is "weakly weekly" — a dilute fertiliser solution applied at every watering.

Fertiliser Choice

Use a balanced orchid fertiliser (20-20-20 NPK ratio) or any balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to one-quarter the label's recommended strength. During bloom, some growers switch to a higher-phosphorus bloom booster (e.g. 10-30-20) for 4–6 weeks to support spike development, though the evidence for this making a significant difference is mixed.

Application

Apply the dilute fertiliser solution in place of plain water every watering during the growing season (spring to early autumn). Once a month, flush the bark with plain water — no fertiliser — to wash out accumulated mineral salts. In winter, reduce fertilising to once a month or stop entirely while the plant rests.

Signs of Over-Fertilising

White crusty deposits on the bark or pot surface indicate salt build-up from excess fertiliser. Brown leaf tips can also result. If you see these, flush the bark thoroughly 2–3 times with plain water and reduce fertiliser concentration.

How to Get Your Orchid to Rebloom

Reblooming is the goal most orchid growers chase. The good news: Phalaenopsis will reliably rebloom when given the right trigger. The bad news: patience is required — the cycle from last bloom to new spike typically takes 6–9 months.

Step 1: Let the Plant Rest After Blooming

After all flowers drop, cut or break off the spike cleanly at the base (or above a node if the spike is still green — see Spike Management below). Continue regular care: watering, fertilising, bright indirect light. The plant will put energy into roots and leaves during this rest period.

Step 2: Provide the Temperature Differential

Move the orchid to a spot where night temperatures drop to 15–18°C for 4–6 weeks. This is the critical trigger. A cool bedroom, a position near a draughty window (not cold enough to cause damage), or an unheated spare room in autumn typically provides this. Day temperatures of 24–27°C with night temperatures around 15°C create the ideal differential.

Step 3: Increase Light

Ensure the plant receives maximum allowable indirect light during the spike-initiation period. Insufficient light is the second most common reason for failure to rebloom after insufficient temperature differential.

Step 4: Watch for the Spike

A new spike emerges from the base of the plant between the bottom leaves, appearing as a small green point that grows slowly upward. Distinguish it from a root (which emerges from the same area) by shape: spikes have a slightly flattened, mitten-shaped tip; roots have a smooth rounded tip. Once visible, move the plant back to its growing position and resume normal care.

Spike Management After Blooming

Once the last flower falls, you have two options:

Always use clean, sterile scissors or a blade to cut spikes. Wipe with rubbing alcohol between cuts to avoid spreading disease.

Repotting Orchids

When to Repot

Repot Phalaenopsis every 18–24 months, or when:

Always repot after the plant finishes blooming — never during bloom, as this causes flower drop.

Repotting Process

  1. Remove the orchid from its pot and shake/rinse away old bark.
  2. Inspect roots: healthy roots are white, grey, or green, and firm. Brown, mushy roots are rotted — trim them back to healthy tissue with sterile scissors. Dust cuts with cinnamon powder (a natural fungicide) or sulphur powder.
  3. Allow the orchid to air-dry for 30–60 minutes after root trimming.
  4. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the root mass — orchids prefer snug pots. If the root mass fits in the original pot after trimming, reuse it.
  5. Add a layer of bark to the bottom of the pot. Position the orchid with the oldest pseudobulbs or oldest growth at the back edge, so new growth has room to develop toward the front.
  6. Pack bark around the roots firmly enough to hold the plant upright but not compressed.
  7. Water lightly after repotting and place in shade for 1–2 weeks before returning to normal light.

Common Problems and Fixes

Yellow Leaves

The lowest leaves on a Phalaenopsis naturally yellow and drop over time as the plant produces new growth upward — this is normal. If multiple leaves are yellowing simultaneously or young leaves are affected, investigate: overwatering, direct sun, root rot, or viral disease.

Shrivelled Leaves

Shrivelled, accordion-pleated leaves indicate the plant is dehydrated. Check roots first — if brown and mushy (rot), the plant cannot absorb water despite what the bark says. If roots are healthy but bark is very dry, increase watering frequency. Severely dehydrated roots may need soaking for several hours.

No Roots in the Pot

Sometimes when a supermarket orchid is removed from its pot, there are no viable roots — just a bare stem with leaves. This happens due to root rot during commercial growing and transport. Rescue is possible: place the stem in a container of room-temperature water for a few hours daily, allow to air-dry, and repeat. New roots can emerge from the stem in 2–4 months with consistent care.

Black Leaf Tips or Spots

Black spots are often bacterial rot caused by water sitting on leaves or in the crown. Remove affected tissue with sterile scissors, apply cinnamon to the cut, and improve air circulation. Black tips are often physical damage from cold drafts or fertiliser burn.

Pests

Common orchid pests include scale insects (brown bumps on stems and leaves), mealybugs (white cottony clusters), spider mites (fine webbing on leaves), and thrips (silvery streaking). Treat scale and mealybugs with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab or neem oil spray. Spider mites respond to repeated neem oil or insecticidal soap sprays every 5–7 days. Quarantine any affected plant immediately.

Grey or silver orchid roots are dry roots — this is completely normal for aerial roots and for roots inside bark media between waterings. Healthy dry roots are silvery-white and firm. After watering, roots turn bright green as they absorb moisture. Only brown, soft, mushy roots indicate rot and need to be removed.
