Orchid Root Rot: How to Identify, Treat, and Save Your Plant

Root rot is the most common cause of orchid death — and one of the most preventable. The good news is that an orchid with root rot can usually be saved if you catch it early and act decisively. Even a plant that looks lifeless with nothing but brown mush below the surface has been successfully revived with the right rescue technique.

This guide walks you through identifying rot, distinguishing it from dormant or aerial roots, performing a rescue repot, and preventing rot from returning.

Why Orchid Roots Rot

Root rot is caused by anaerobic conditions — a state where roots are surrounded by waterlogged, oxygen-depleted medium. Under these conditions, opportunistic fungi and bacteria (most commonly Pythium, Fusarium, and Phytophthora species) colonise root tissue, breaking it down rapidly.

Three factors create anaerobic conditions in orchid pots:

  1. Overwatering: Watering before the medium has dried sufficiently.
  2. Degraded medium: Old bark that has broken down holds water like soil instead of draining freely.
  3. Poor drainage: No drainage holes, or drainage holes blocked by root growth.

Identifying Root Rot: The Colour and Texture Test

Orchid roots have a silver-white outer coating called velamen that changes colour depending on moisture content. Understanding this colour language is the key to diagnosing root health.

Don't Confuse These With Root Rot

  • Flat, papery, grey roots: Severely dehydrated but alive. Rehydrate slowly with longer soaks before cutting.
  • Tan-coloured dead tips: Normal — roots stop growing when they hit the pot wall. Trim just the tip if desired.
  • Velamen peeling off to reveal green inside: Healthy active growth. The outer layer is normal to shed as roots elongate.

How to Perform a Rescue Repot

You will need: sterile scissors or pruning shears, cinnamon powder, fresh orchid bark or moss, a clean pot with drainage holes, and rubbing alcohol to sterilise your cutting tool between cuts.

Step 1: Remove and Inspect

Remove the orchid from its pot. If the plant is stuck, squeeze plastic pot sides or run a butter knife around the inside. Shake loose all old medium. Rinse roots gently under room-temperature water to see them clearly.

Step 2: Assess What You Have

Count healthy roots. You need at least two or three firm, white-to-green roots for a recovery. If you find zero healthy roots, survival is unlikely but still worth attempting — some orchids produce new roots from the crown even with no existing root system.

Step 3: Remove Rotten Roots

Cut all brown, mushy, or hollow roots back to where healthy tissue begins. If brown runs all the way to the base, cut at the base. Do not leave partial rotten roots — they continue spreading fungal infection. Sterilise scissors between each cut with a quick wipe of rubbing alcohol.

If the rot has reached the crown or base of the plant, lightly scrape away the affected tissue with a clean blade. If the crown itself is rotted (central growing point is brown and mushy), the plant cannot be saved.

Step 4: Apply Cinnamon Powder

Dust every cut surface generously with ground cinnamon. Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, a naturally occurring compound with broad antifungal properties. It is safe for orchid tissue and does not harm velamen. Let the plant sit uncovered in open air for 30–60 minutes to allow cut surfaces to callus slightly before repotting.

Activated charcoal powder is an equally effective alternative. Avoid sulphur-based wound sealants, which can be phytotoxic to orchid roots.

Step 5: Repot in Fresh Medium

Soak fresh bark overnight before use. Choose a pot that fits the remaining root system — smaller than the previous pot is usually correct after cutting away dead roots. Place a small amount of bark in the base, settle remaining roots, and fill around them. Do not pack tightly.

Step 6: The Critical Drying Period

Do not water for 5–7 days after a rescue repot. This deliberately stresses the remaining roots to stimulate new root growth. Dehydration triggers the orchid to prioritise root production. Place in bright indirect light and maintain moderate humidity.

After the drying period, resume the soak method with longer gaps between waterings — every 10–12 days rather than your previous schedule.

Recovery Timeline

  • Week 1–2: No visible change. Do not water. Plant may lose a lower leaf — this is normal reallocation of resources.
  • Week 3–4: New root tip (small, bright green point) may emerge from the stem base.
  • Week 6–8: Root growing actively. Plant stabilising.
  • Month 3–4: Multiple healthy roots visible. Resume light fertilising (quarter-strength).
  • Month 6+: Full recovery. Plant may initiate a bloom spike if conditions are right.

Preventing Root Rot

Once you understand the causes, prevention is straightforward:

  • Check before watering: Lift the pot. If it feels heavy, postpone watering. Only water when the pot feels light and roots show silver-grey colour.
  • Replace bark every 18–24 months: Degraded bark is the most common underlying cause of recurring rot.
  • Use clear pots: Seeing root colour directly eliminates guesswork about when to water.
  • Ensure drainage: Never let orchids sit in water-filled saucers for more than 30 minutes after watering.
  • Increase airflow: A gentle fan running nearby dramatically reduces fungal pressure on roots.
  • Quarantine sick plants: Fungal rot can spread through shared water. Keep a rotting plant isolated during treatment.
