What Are Thrips
Thrips are tiny, slender insects in the order Thysanoptera — a name that translates literally as "fringe wing," describing the distinctive feathery-fringed wings that adult thrips possess. Adults are 1–2mm long, pale yellow to dark brown or black depending on species, and move with surprising speed when disturbed. Their narrow body and fringed wings are best seen under 10x magnification.
Several species attack houseplants, but the most damaging and widespread are the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), the onion thrips (Thrips tabaci), and the greenhouse thrips (Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis). Western flower thrips is also one of the most economically significant plant pests worldwide because it vectors two devastating viruses — impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV) and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) — for which there is no cure once a plant is infected.
Unlike aphids or scale insects, both larval and adult thrips actively feed on plants, meaning the damaging stage is present throughout most of the lifecycle. Thrips feed by rasping the leaf surface with their asymmetric mouthparts (one mandible is vestigial) and lapping up the cell contents, rather than by piercing and sucking like most other plant pests.
Identifying Thrips Damage
Thrips damage has a distinctive appearance once you know what to look for, though it can initially be confused with spider mite damage or certain fungal problems:
Silvery Streaking and White Patches
The primary visual signature of thrips feeding is silvery, bronze, or bleached streaking across leaf surfaces — the result of hundreds of individual cells being rasped empty. Unlike spider mite stippling (individual dots), thrips damage produces continuous streaks and patches that follow the direction of feeding movement. On heavily damaged leaves, the entire upper surface may appear dull, whitish, or papery.
Black Frass Dots
Almost always accompanying thrips damage are tiny black specks — the thrips' excrement (frass). These dots are scattered across damaged areas and are a highly reliable identifying feature. Under magnification, frass dots are spherical and gleaming black, quite distinct from spider mite waste. The combination of silvery streaks plus black dots is virtually diagnostic for thrips.
Flower and Growing Tip Damage
Thrips are particularly attracted to flowers and new growth, where tissues are softest. Flower damage includes petal discoloration, premature dropping, deformed petals with silvery flecking, and distorted stamens. Affected growing tips may show deformed, tightly curled new leaves that unroll to reveal silver streaking throughout.
The Paper Test
As with spider mites, hold a sheet of white paper under suspect growth and tap the plant firmly. Thrips appear as tiny, elongated slivers — slightly larger and more cigar-shaped than spider mites. They move immediately when they land, unlike mites which may hesitate. Watch for movement with good light and magnification.
The Thrips Lifecycle (Why They're Hard to Kill)
Understanding the thrips lifecycle explains why foliar treatment alone consistently fails to achieve complete control:
Egg Stage
Female thrips lay kidney-shaped eggs directly into plant tissue — inserted into leaves, petals, and stems through a saw-like ovipositor. This means eggs are inside the plant and completely protected from surface treatments. Eggs hatch in 5–10 days depending on temperature.
Larval Stages (Instars 1 and 2)
Larval thrips (nymphs) look like tiny, pale, wingless versions of adults. They feed actively on plant surfaces — both instars are vulnerable to contact insecticides and are the life stages targeted by foliar sprays. This phase lasts approximately 8–15 days total.
Pupal Stages (Pre-pupa and Pupa) — The Critical Complication
After the second larval instar, thrips drop from the plant into the soil and pupate there. This is the feature that makes thrips uniquely difficult to control. The pupal stages in soil are not feeding and are not affected by foliar treatments. They remain in soil for 5–10 days before emerging as adults. Any treatment program that does not also address the soil is missing the pupal stages, which will emerge to reinfest the plant continuously.
Adult Stage
Adults emerge from soil, fly to the plant, and begin feeding and reproducing immediately. Adults live 30–45 days and can lay 150–300 eggs over their lifetime. At typical indoor temperatures, the complete lifecycle (egg to adult) takes approximately 20–30 days. Multiple overlapping generations mean that without treatment, populations escalate continuously.
Which Plants Are Most Vulnerable
Thrips have broad host ranges but certain plants are consistently most affected in indoor settings:
- Peace lily — particularly susceptible during flowering; flowers become discolored and distorted
- Calatheas and marantas — silvery streaking across their patterned leaves is especially visible
- Fiddle-leaf fig — thrips cause distinctive streaking on the large leaves
- Hibiscus — flowers are heavily attacked; petal damage is severe
- Roses — flower thrips (including western flower thrips) are among the top rose pests
- Ferns — greenhouse thrips commonly infest ferns in indoor collections
- Impatiens — highly susceptible to both thrips feeding and INSV virus transmission
- Tomatoes and peppers — both edible and ornamental varieties; TSWV is a serious concern
Treatment Step by Step
Effective thrips control requires simultaneous treatment of both the plant and the soil to address all life stages present at the same time.
Step 1: Isolate Immediately
Move the infested plant away from all others. Adult thrips fly readily and will colonize neighboring plants quickly. See our quarantine guide for full isolation protocol.
Step 2: Remove Badly Damaged Growth and Flowers
Prune off all heavily damaged leaves, buds, and flowers. This removes eggs deposited in plant tissue and reduces the adult and larval population significantly before you begin spray treatment. Dispose of all prunings in sealed bags — do not compost.
Step 3: Place Blue Sticky Traps
Place blue sticky traps at plant canopy level around the infested plant. Blue is significantly more attractive to thrips than yellow. These traps serve dual purposes: catching and killing adult thrips and providing a visual measure of population decline over the treatment period.
Step 4: Foliar Spray Treatment
Apply spinosad, neem oil, or insecticidal soap spray to all plant surfaces. Pay particular attention to growing tips (where eggs are deposited and larvae feed) and the undersides of all leaves. Use a fine mist sprayer for maximum coverage. Apply in the evening to reduce UV degradation of spinosad and neem. Repeat every 5–7 days.
Step 5: Soil Treatment (Critical)
Drench the soil with BTi (Mosquito Bits) solution or a spinosad soil drench to kill pupating thrips in the soil. This step is what most treatment protocols omit and why thrips keep returning. Step 6: Continue for at Least 3–4 Weeks
Minimum effective treatment duration is 3–4 full cycles of spray plus soil drench, applied every 5–7 days. This is necessary to break through the egg stage (protected in plant tissue), the pupal stage (protected in soil), and successive adult generations.
Spinosad vs Neem vs Systemic
Spinosad
Spinosad is derived from the fermentation of a soil bacterium, Saccharopolyspora spinosa, and is the most effective organic treatment for thrips currently available. It works by disrupting insect nervous system function through a unique mechanism (targeting acetylcholine nicotinic receptors and GABA-gated chloride channels). Spinosad kills thrips on contact and through ingestion, and has residual activity of 5–7 days. It is highly effective against both adults and nymphs. Resistance can develop with overuse — rotate with other modes of action (neem, insecticidal soap) in alternating treatment cycles.
Neem Oil
Neem oil is less immediately effective on thrips than spinosad but works well as a complementary treatment and preventive. Azadirachtin disrupts thrips molting and reproduction over multiple generations. Use neem oil in alternating applications between spinosad treatments to reduce resistance pressure. Insecticidal Soap
Insecticidal soap kills thrips on direct contact but has no residual activity. It is useful as a supplement — particularly for getting coverage into tight growing tips where sprayer nozzles may not penetrate well — but should not be the sole treatment for established infestations.
Systemic Imidacloprid
For severe or persistent infestations that do not respond to multiple weeks of organic treatment, systemic imidacloprid soil drench is effective against thrips feeding on plant tissue. As with all neonicotinoids, use only on ornamental plants and follow label instructions carefully. This is a last-resort option when other methods have failed. Sticky Traps and Monitoring
Sticky traps serve two critical functions in thrips management: population reduction and monitoring.
Blue Traps for Thrips
Place blue sticky traps at canopy height — adults fly horizontally at leaf level and are attracted to blue more strongly than any other color. One trap per plant is the minimum for monitoring; two or three for active control. Position traps so the sticky surface faces the plant canopy, not upward toward ceiling lights.
Reading Trap Catches
Count adults caught per trap per day during your treatment period. In the first week of treatment, catches typically increase as disturbed adults fly to traps. By week 2–3, catches should decline significantly if treatment is working. If catches plateau or increase after week 2, intensify treatment or reassess whether the infestation is being reintroduced from another source.
Traps as Early Warning
Blue sticky traps placed near susceptible plants year-round serve as excellent early warning devices. Catching a single thrips in a trap in an otherwise symptom-free plant signals the need for immediate inspection and possibly preventive treatment before a colony establishes.
Preventing Thrips
Quarantine Every New Plant
New plants — especially flowering plants and those from warm nursery environments — are the most common introduction route for thrips. Quarantine for at least 3 weeks and inspect flowers and growing tips carefully. Apply a preventive spinosad or neem treatment during quarantine. See our full quarantine protocol.
Monitor with Blue Sticky Traps Year-Round
Maintain blue sticky traps near the most susceptible plants in your collection at all times. Early detection of the first few adults allows treatment to begin before the population reaches damaging levels and eggs are deposited throughout the plant's tissues.
Inspect Flowers and New Growth on All Acquisitions
Thrips concentrate in flowers and growing tips. When inspecting a new plant before purchase or introduction, focus particularly on open flowers (look inside for tiny pale insects), unfurling new leaves, and any areas of silvery discoloration. Use a hand lens for young plants where damage may be minimal but populations already established.
Control Weeds Near Indoor Plants
Thrips overwinter in many outdoor weeds and ornamental plants. Plants placed on patios or balconies in summer and returned indoors in fall can carry thrips back into your home. Inspect and treat any plant that has been outdoors before bringing it inside, or apply a preventive soil drench and foliar spray as a precautionary measure.
