How Pests Arrive on Houseplants
Most houseplant pests arrive in one of four ways:
- New plants from nurseries or shops — the most common route. Garden centres and online retailers are high-traffic environments where pests move freely between plants.
- Contaminated potting soil — especially fungus gnat larvae, which live in the organic material in potting mixes.
- Open windows — aphids, whiteflies, and thrips are mobile and enter homes through windows and doors.
- Clothing or tools after outdoor gardening — spider mites in particular hitchhike effectively.
Once established, pests spread between plants through physical contact, crawling (mealybugs, scale crawlers), or airborne dispersal on silk (spider mites). A single infested plant in a collection of 20 can spread to all others within weeks if untreated.
Weekly Inspection Routine
Catching pests early — when populations are small — makes treatment far easier and more successful. Build a 5-minute weekly inspection into your watering routine:
- Check new growth and growing tips (aphids, thrips, mealybugs love tender new leaves)
- Flip leaves and check undersides thoroughly (spider mites, whiteflies, aphids, scale nymphs)
- Inspect stem joints and where leaves meet stems (mealybugs, scale, thrips)
- Check soil surface for tiny flies (fungus gnats) or white specks
- Run your fingers along stems feeling for bumps (scale) or cottony residue (mealybugs)
Use magnification — a 10x loupe or even a phone camera zoomed in — for reliable detection of small pests like spider mites and thrips.
Spider Mites
Spider mites are among the most destructive and common houseplant pests, especially in hot, dry conditions.
Identification: Stippled (tiny pale dots) or bronzed, silvery leaves. Fine silky webbing between leaves and stems — most visible in morning light. Tiny moving specks visible with magnification (do the white paper test: shake a leaf over white paper and look for moving dots). Multiple species; the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) is most common.
Conditions they love: Hot (above 75°F), dry air (below 40% RH). Central heating in winter creates ideal conditions. Plants near radiators are most vulnerable.

Fungus Gnats
The tiny flies hovering around your plant pots are almost certainly fungus gnats — one of the most common indoor plant pests.
Identification: Adults are dark, 1–3mm flies resembling tiny mosquitoes, hovering near soil. Larvae are white, translucent, 3–5mm worms in the top inch of soil. Larvae damage roots; adults are mainly a nuisance.
Cause: Overwatered soil with decaying organic matter. The moist surface is the breeding ground.
Treatment: Let the top 2 inches of soil dry completely between waterings (most effective single step). Use yellow sticky traps to catch adults. Mealybugs
Mealybugs are one of the most persistent houseplant pests — they hide in crevices and reproduce rapidly.
Identification: White or cream cottony or waxy masses at stem joints, leaf axils, and leaf undersides. Sticky honeydew on leaves below. Sooty black mold on honeydew. Individual bugs are soft, oval, 2–5mm, covered in white waxy threads.
Treatment: Dab individuals directly with a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol — the most effective targeted removal. Aphids
Aphids reproduce asexually at explosive rates — a single aphid can produce thousands in weeks.
Identification: Small (1–3mm), pear-shaped, soft-bodied insects clustering on new growth, growing tips, and stem undersides. Colors vary by species: green, black, brown, yellow, or woolly white. Sticky honeydew residue on lower leaves. Curled or distorted new growth.

Scale Insects
Scale insects are easily mistaken for part of the plant — they look like bumps or encrustations on stems and leaves.
Identification: Immovable brown, tan, white, or waxy bumps on stems and leaves. Soft scale excretes honeydew; armored scale does not. Scrape with a fingernail — if it's a pest, it scrapes off; if it's a natural lenticel (bark pore), it doesn't.
Treatment: Manual removal with rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab or soft toothbrush (works for both types). Then horticultural oil or neem oil smothers the crawlers (mobile juvenile stage). Thrips
Thrips are very small but cause distinctive damage — and they're notoriously difficult to eliminate completely.
Identification: Silver or bronze streaking on leaves with tiny black specks of frass (excrement). Adults are 1–2mm, slender, fringed wings, fast-moving. Flowers show discoloration and distortion. Do the white paper test to detect (tap leaves over white paper, look for tiny moving slivers).

Whiteflies
Whiteflies form characteristic clouds of tiny white insects when the plant is disturbed.
Identification: Tiny (1–2mm) white moth-like insects that fly up in a cloud when leaves are disturbed. Nymphs are flat, scale-like, on leaf undersides. Yellowing leaves, honeydew, sooty mold.

Quarantine Protocol
Quarantining new plants is the single most effective pest prevention measure. Here's the protocol:
- Separate room — not just a separate shelf. Spider mites disperse on silk threads through air movement; mealybugs crawl.
- Inspect thoroughly — check all leaf surfaces (top and bottom), stem joints, growing tips, and soil surface.
- Preventive treatment — apply neem oil spray at purchase (day 1), day 7, and day 14.
- Duration — minimum 2 weeks; 4 weeks for plants from unknown sources.
- Pass criteria — no visible pests, no damage progression, soil not persistently gnat-ridden.

Prevention: The Best Pest Control
Treating an infestation is always harder than preventing one. These habits reduce pest pressure dramatically:
- Quarantine all new plants — non-negotiable
- Weekly inspections — catch problems when they're small
- Maintain humidity 50%+ — spider mites hate moisture
- Don't overwater — eliminates fungus gnat breeding habitat
- Good airflow — a gentle fan discourages fungal diseases and reduces some pest pressure
