How to Diagnose Houseplant Problems Correctly
Most houseplant problems are misdiagnosed. The most common error I see: a plant drooping and losing leaves is assumed to be underwatered, so it gets watered more. But drooping with wet soil is almost always overwatering — and adding more water makes root rot worse and can kill the plant within days.
Before doing anything else, ask these questions in order:
- What does the soil feel like? Stick a finger 5cm into the soil. Wet? Moist? Dry? Bone-dry pulling away from the pot? This one piece of information solves 60% of diagnosis immediately.
- Where is the problem occurring? Lower leaves only? Upper leaves? Leaf tips? Whole leaves? Stem? Soil surface? Location narrows the cause significantly.
- What has changed recently? Did you move the plant? Change watering frequency? Start fertilizing? New location means new light conditions. New season means lower humidity or shorter days.
- Are there any visible insects? Check under leaves, in leaf axils, and on the soil surface. Many pest problems look like care problems at first glance.
- How long have you had the plant? Newly purchased plants often struggle from store-to-home transition stress. Recently repotted plants go through a settling period. Context matters.

Yellow Leaves
Yellow leaves are the most common houseplant complaint and also the most misunderstood — because yellowing has many different causes, some serious and some completely normal.
Normal Aging (Lower Leaves)
Every plant loses its oldest leaves over time. For most houseplants, these are the lowest leaves on the stem. If 1–2 lower leaves are yellowing while the rest of the plant looks healthy and is producing new growth, this is simply natural aging. No action needed.
Overwatering (Most Common Serious Cause)
Overwatering causes yellowing because waterlogged soil suffocates roots. Without adequate oxygen, roots die, and the plant can no longer transport water and nutrients to leaves. Paradoxically, the plant then wilts despite being in wet soil, and leaves yellow and drop.
Diagnosis: soil is wet or very slow-drying, pot feels heavy, lower leaves are yellowing and soft, stem may be mushy at soil level.

Underwatering
Drought-stressed plants yellow from the leaf tips inward and eventually drop leaves. The soil will be bone-dry and pulling away from the pot edges.

Insufficient Light
Plants in low light cannot photosynthesize efficiently, leading to pale, yellowing leaves and weak growth. If the plant is in a dim corner and yellowing is gradual and widespread (not just lower leaves), move to a brighter location. Yellowing from low light is usually slow and uniform — it doesn't affect just one area or one leaf.
Nutrient Deficiency
Nitrogen deficiency causes overall yellowing (especially older leaves). Iron deficiency causes yellowing between veins while veins stay green (interveinal chlorosis). Magnesium deficiency causes similar interveinal yellowing on older leaves. These are less common in houseplants than overwatering, but if you haven't fertilized in many months, they're worth considering.
Fix: feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer. If you suspect specific mineral deficiency, use a specialist fertilizer.
Root Bound
A severely root-bound plant can't uptake nutrients efficiently, leading to yellowing. If the plant is in the same small pot it came in two years ago, and roots are clearly emerging from drainage holes or circling visibly through the pot walls, repotting is overdue.
Brown Leaf Tips and Edges
Brown tips are one of the most common cosmetic complaints. Unlike yellow leaves, brown tips rarely indicate a life-threatening problem — but they do indicate environmental conditions that should be improved.
Low Humidity (Most Common Cause)
Most tropical houseplants (Pothos, Calathea, Ferns, Spider plant) prefer humidity of 50–70%. Indoor air in heated or air-conditioned homes often drops to 30–40% or lower. The leaf tips — the furthest point from the roots — are the first to desiccate.
Fix: group plants together (creates a microclimate of slightly higher humidity), place on a pebble tray filled with water (the evaporating water raises local humidity), run a humidifier nearby, or mist leaves lightly with water in the morning.
Salt and Fluoride Buildup
Tap water contains minerals (fluoride, chlorine, calcium, magnesium) and fertilizers contain salts. Over time these accumulate in the soil and draw moisture OUT of root cells through osmosis. The result: brown leaf tips despite adequate watering. You can often see a white crust on the soil surface or pot rim.
Fix: flush the soil thoroughly by running water through it for several minutes until it drains freely from the bottom. Do this every 3–4 months. Alternatively, repot with fresh soil. Switch to filtered or rainwater if brown tips persist.
Inconsistent Watering
Allowing the plant to severely dry out between waterings causes tip die-back, even if you then water adequately most of the time. The brown tips from a previous drought episode don't recover — they remain brown permanently. But future tips will stay green once you establish a consistent watering schedule.
Direct Sun
Direct harsh sun, particularly through glass, scorches leaf tips and edges. The brown is crispy and appears suddenly (within days of a location change or seasonal sun angle change). Move to bright indirect light.
Drooping and Wilting
A drooping plant is alarming but the cause is almost always one of two things: too much water or too little. Distinguishing them is easy — check the soil.
Drooping with Wet Soil = Overwatering / Root Rot
If the plant is drooping and the soil is wet (or was recently watered), the problem is almost certainly overwatering. When roots die from root rot, the plant can't absorb water even though there's plenty available. The leaves wilt exactly as they would from drought. This counterintuitive symptom is the most dangerous mistake to make — adding more water will accelerate root death.

Drooping with Dry Soil = Underwatering
If the soil is bone-dry and the plant is drooping, water thoroughly immediately. Most plants recover within hours of a good watering. If they don't recover within 24 hours, the plant may have been severely drought-stressed for an extended period — leave it in a shaded spot and maintain consistent moisture while it recovers.
Drooping After Repotting or Moving
Transplant shock is a normal temporary response to repotting. Roots are disturbed and temporarily less efficient at water uptake. Keep in shade, maintain consistent moisture, and the plant should recover in 1–2 weeks.
Drooping in Direct Sun
Some plants droop temporarily in intense afternoon sun as a response to heat stress — not because they need water. If the plant is otherwise healthy and bounces back when temperatures cool, this is normal. Move to a spot with bright indirect rather than direct afternoon sun.
Overwatering and Root Rot
Overwatering is the single leading cause of houseplant death. It's not the water itself that kills the plant — it's the anaerobic (oxygen-depleted) conditions that develop in waterlogged soil. Without oxygen, aerobic root cells die, and the resulting dead tissue becomes colonized by anaerobic bacteria and fungi that cause rot.
Signs of Overwatering
- Yellowing leaves, especially lower leaves
- Soft, mushy leaves (in succulents and semi-succulents)
- Wilting despite wet soil
- Soil that stays wet for more than 2 weeks
- White or green mold on the soil surface
- Fungus gnats in the soil
- Sour, earthy, or rotten smell from the soil
- When removed from pot: brown, black, mushy roots that may smell bad
How to Save an Overwatered Plant
- Stop watering immediately.
- Move to bright, indirect light to encourage evaporation.
- If the pot has a saucer, empty it — never leave a pot sitting in standing water.
- If symptoms are severe: remove from pot, shake off as much soil as possible, and inspect roots. Cut away all brown, mushy roots with clean scissors. Let air-dry for 1–2 hours.
- Repot in fresh, well-draining potting mix. Don't reuse the old soil — it harbors the bacteria and fungi that caused the rot.
- Adjust your watering schedule to allow the soil to dry partially between waterings.

Underwatering
Underwatering is less common than overwatering but still causes significant plant stress. Signs: drooping/wilting, dry crispy brown leaf tips or edges, leaves curling inward (to reduce evaporative surface area), soil bone dry and pulling away from pot edges, pot extremely light when lifted.
Fix: water thoroughly — not a little sip, but a full soaking until water drains from the bottom. For severely drought-stressed plants, the dry soil may initially repel water. Either soak the pot in a basin of water for 30 minutes (bottom watering, which rehydrates the full soil column), or water very slowly in multiple passes.

Leggy, Stretched Growth
A "leggy" plant has long, bare stems with leaves far apart — rather than the compact, bushy form you'd expect. This is called etiolation and has one cause: insufficient light. The plant is stretching toward the light source, producing long internodes (the stem segments between leaves) in an attempt to reach brighter conditions.
Fix: move to brighter indirect light. Cut back the leggy stems to encourage bushier regrowth. Propagate the cuttings while you're at it (see our propagation guide).
Prevention: rotate plants 90° every 2–3 weeks so all sides receive equal light and the plant grows evenly.
Slow or No Growth
If a plant is alive but not growing, the most common causes are:
- Dormancy: Most houseplants grow much more slowly in winter. This is normal — don't fertilize, don't repot, don't overwater while the plant is resting.
- Insufficient light: Without adequate photosynthesis, plants cannot generate the energy for new growth. This is often the cause of "nothing is happening" plants stuck in dim corners.
- Root-bound: A severely root-bound plant has maxed out its soil volume and can't find the nutrients and water it needs for growth. Repot into a slightly larger pot with fresh compost.
- Needs feeding: If you've never fertilized, or haven't in many months, the plant may simply have depleted the nutrients in its potting mix. Feed monthly during the growing season.
- Recently purchased/repotted: Plants from garden centers are often in a transition period. They focus on root establishment before pushing visible growth.
Common Pests: Identification and Treatment
Pests are often the last thing plant owners think to check — but they're responsible for a significant share of "mysterious" plant problems. Before assuming a care issue, always inspect under leaves and in leaf axils for insects.
Fungus Gnats
Small, dark flies hovering around plants or the soil surface. They're attracted to moist soil where their larvae (tiny white worms) live and feed on organic matter and, in large numbers, on plant roots.
Harm level: Adults are harmless to plants. Larvae can damage roots of seedlings and young plants. Established adult plants can usually tolerate a moderate infestation.
Treatment:
- Let the top 5cm of soil dry completely between waterings — larvae cannot survive without moisture.
- Yellow sticky traps near the plant catch adults and break the reproductive cycle.
- Soil drench with diluted hydrogen peroxide (1 part 3% H2O2 to 4 parts water) kills larvae on contact.
- Neem oil soil drench also works.
- Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (BTi) granules are a biological control that kills larvae selectively without harming plants.

Spider Mites
Tiny (nearly invisible) arachnids that live under leaves and feed on plant cells. Signs: dusty, stippled or bronzed leaf undersides, fine webbing between leaves or at leaf axils, overall dull/unhealthy appearance. Spider mites thrive in hot, dry conditions and can multiply rapidly.
Treatment:
- Isolate the affected plant immediately — spider mites spread.
- Shower the plant thoroughly, focusing on leaf undersides, to physically remove mites. Repeat weekly.
- Neem oil spray (diluted with water and dish soap) applied to all leaf surfaces, including undersides, every 5–7 days for 3 weeks.
- Insecticidal soap spray.
- Raise humidity around the plant — spider mites hate humidity.

Mealybugs
White, fluffy or cottony insects found in leaf axils, on stems, and under leaves. They look like tiny balls of cotton wool. They suck plant sap and excrete honeydew (sticky substance), which can lead to sooty mold growth.
Treatment:
- Isolate immediately.
- Dab individual mealybugs with a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol — this dissolves the waxy coating and kills them on contact.
- Neem oil spray applied thoroughly every 5–7 days.
- Insecticidal soap spray.
- For severe infestations, systemic insecticide (imidacloprid) applied to the soil is absorbed by the plant and kills insects feeding on it.

Scale Insects
Scale look like tiny brown or tan bumps attached to stems and leaf undersides — they're so immobile they're often mistaken for part of the plant. They suck plant sap and weaken the plant over time. Like mealybugs, they excrete honeydew and can cause sooty mold.
Treatment:
- Scrape off scale with a soft toothbrush or fingernail.
- Wipe stems with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton ball.
- Neem oil spray or horticultural oil spray to suffocate remaining insects and eggs.
- Systemic insecticide for severe infestations.
- Repeat treatment weekly for at least 4 weeks — scale eggs are resistant to most treatments.
