Thyme Varieties for Indoors
Thyme is a diverse genus with dozens of species and cultivars, but only a handful are worth growing indoors — either for culinary use or decorative appeal. Here's what you'll most commonly encounter:
- Common thyme (Thymus vulgaris): The standard culinary thyme and the best all-around choice for growing indoors. It has an upright growth habit, small grey-green leaves, and a classic earthy-herbal flavor built around thymol and carvacrol. Most widely available at garden centers and grocery stores. If you only grow one variety, make it this one.
- Lemon thyme (Thymus citriodorus): Same care requirements as common thyme but with a lovely citrus fragrance and flavor that makes it exceptional with fish, chicken, and even in desserts or herbal teas. Slightly more compact than common thyme. A worthwhile second plant for any indoor herb gardener.
- Woolly thyme (Thymus pseudolanuginosus): Grown primarily for its soft, fuzzy, silver-grey appearance rather than flavor. Not used culinarily. Can be an interesting decorative plant in a sunny windowsill arrangement, but it offers little practical value for cooking.
- Creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum): A low-spreading variety with a ground-cover habit that can look striking in a wide, shallow pot. It has a mild flavor — not as intense as common thyme — and is more often grown decoratively than for cooking.
For cooking, common thyme delivers the strongest and most versatile flavor, while lemon thyme adds a distinctive citrus dimension. Many varieties look quite similar when young, so always check the label if flavor matters to you — you don't want to discover you bought woolly thyme when you expected to harvest for cooking.
Light Requirements
Light is the single most important factor in successfully growing thyme indoors. Like rosemary, thyme is native to the Mediterranean basin — sun-baked hillsides and rocky, nutrient-poor terrain baked in intense sunlight for most of the year. It evolved for far more light than the average home provides.
Minimum requirement: 6 hours of direct sun. Eight or more hours is better. This is direct sunlight — actual sun rays hitting the leaves — not bright ambient light from a large window. A south-facing or southwest-facing window is ideal for most northern hemisphere homes. A west-facing window can work if it receives strong, unobstructed afternoon sun.
In low light, thyme declines visibly and quickly. The stems become long and leggy as the plant stretches toward any available light. Leaves get smaller and further apart on the stem. Most importantly, the essential oil content — the compounds (thymol, carvacrol) that create thyme's distinctive flavor and aroma — decreases significantly. You end up with a scraggly, flavorless plant that barely resembles the herb you intended to grow.
If you don't have a south-facing window, a quality LED grow light is an effective substitute. Place it 4-6 inches above the plant and run it for 14-16 hours per day using a timer. One excellent strategy: move thyme outdoors onto a sunny patio or balcony once your last frost date has passed. Outdoor summer sun is vastly more intense than indoor light, and thyme will respond with dense, flavorful, compact growth. Just remember to bring it back inside before the first autumn frost if you want to keep using it through winter.
Soil and Drainage
Thyme's roots evolved in thin, rocky, fast-draining Mediterranean soil that never stays wet for long. Recreating those drainage conditions indoors is essential. This means the standard moisture-retaining potting mixes sold for most houseplants are actively harmful to thyme.
Ideal mix: 50% quality potting mix + 50% perlite or coarse horticultural sand. This creates a light, airy substrate that drains rapidly and allows roots to dry out between waterings — exactly what thyme needs. Do not use moisture-control or moisture-retaining potting mixes; these are specifically designed to hold water longer, which is the opposite of what Mediterranean herbs require.
Avoid peat-heavy or compost-heavy mixes for the same reason — they retain too much moisture and create conditions that encourage root rot and fungal disease. A lean, fast-draining mix produces a healthier, more flavorful thyme plant than a rich, moisture-retentive one.
In terms of pH, thyme prefers slightly alkaline to neutral soil — roughly 6.5 to 7.5. Standard potting mixes typically fall in this range, so you don't need to adjust pH under normal circumstances.
One useful technique: add a thin layer of fine gravel or coarse sand around the base of the stem at soil level. This keeps the crown of the plant dry and significantly reduces the risk of crown rot, which can occur when moisture lingers around the stem base.
For pot selection, terracotta is the best choice for thyme. Terracotta is porous and allows moisture to evaporate through the pot walls, helping soil dry out faster. This is a meaningful advantage over plastic pots for a plant that needs dry conditions. Whatever pot material you use, drainage holes are non-negotiable — never grow thyme in a pot without them.
Repot thyme every one to two years in spring. Use fresh fast-draining mix each time. Avoid overpotting (using a pot much larger than the root ball), since excess soil volume holds excess moisture and creates root rot risk.
Watering Thyme Indoors
This is the section that determines whether your thyme thrives or dies. The vast majority of thyme failures indoors come down to one cause: overwatering. Thyme evolved in one of the driest regions on earth and is extraordinarily drought-tolerant. It is not tolerant of wet feet.
The rule: Let the soil dry almost completely between waterings. Push your finger 2-3 inches into the soil. If there is any significant moisture remaining, wait. When the soil feels almost completely dry at that depth, it's time to water.
In practice, this works out to roughly once a week during active spring and summer growth, and once every 10-14 days in winter when growth slows and the plant uses much less water. These are guidelines, not schedules — always check the soil rather than watering on a fixed calendar.
When you do water, water thoroughly. Pour water slowly and evenly until it flows freely from the drainage holes, ensuring the entire root zone is moistened. Then don't water again until the soil is nearly dry. This "soak and dry" approach — water deeply, then wait until nearly dry — is far better for thyme than light, frequent watering.
Thyme wilts gently and gracefully when it gets dry. A slightly drooping thyme plant is not a crisis — it recovers completely within hours of watering. A waterlogged thyme, however, develops root rot within days, and by the time symptoms appear on the leaves, the damage may be irreversible.
Never let thyme sit in standing water in a saucer. After watering, empty the saucer within 30 minutes. Standing water keeps the root zone perpetually wet and is one of the fastest routes to root rot.
Signs you're overwatering:
- Yellowing or browning leaves, especially near the base of the plant
- Soft, mushy stems at the base (crown rot)
- Sudden die-back of individual stems or whole sections
- When you unpot the plant, roots are brown and mushy rather than white and firm

Temperature and Humidity
Thyme is considerably hardier than more cold-sensitive herbs like basil. It grows comfortably across a wide temperature range and handles cool conditions without complaint.
Ideal indoor temperature: 60-75°F (15-24°C) during active growing. Thyme handles temperatures cooler than this — outdoor thyme is typically hardy down to USDA zones 4-5, surviving hard freezes. Indoor thyme tolerates temperatures as low as 45°F without damage. This makes it a good candidate for a cool windowsill, an unheated porch (above freezing), or a cool spare room.
On the warm end, thyme handles the typical warmth of an indoor home well, but dislikes the stagnant, dry hot air near radiators, heating vents, or heat registers. Keep it away from direct heat sources. Good airflow is important for thyme's long-term health.
Humidity: Thyme prefers lower humidity, around 40-50%. Most indoor environments — especially in heated homes during winter — fall comfortably within this range. High humidity combined with poor air circulation creates conditions for grey mold (Botrytis) and powdery mildew, both of which can devastate a thyme plant quickly.
Good air circulation is genuinely beneficial for thyme, not just a nice-to-have. If your indoor space tends toward stagnant air — especially in winter when windows stay closed — a small fan set to low nearby makes a meaningful difference in preventing fungal disease. Even gentle intermittent airflow helps.
Pruning and Harvesting
Regular pruning is not optional for thyme — it's essential. Without consistent harvesting and trimming, thyme naturally becomes increasingly woody and sparse. The lower stems lignify (turn brown and stiff), the plant loses its bushy, productive shape, and flavor quality declines. Regular pruning is the key practice that keeps thyme productive and good-looking year after year.
How to harvest: Use clean, sharp scissors. Snip stems just above a leaf pair — the plant will branch from that point, creating bushier growth rather than a bare stick. Always leave at least two to three sets of leaves on each stem you harvest from. Never strip a stem completely bare.
Green tips vs. woody stems: This distinction is critical. Always harvest from the green, leafy upper portions of the stems. Never cut into the old, brown, woody lower stems — thyme does not reliably regenerate from old wood the way some other herbs do. If you cut back into pure woody stem, that branch may not recover.
Frequency: Light, frequent pruning throughout the growing season is far better than occasional heavy cuts. If you're cooking regularly, harvesting a few stems every week naturally keeps the plant in good shape. If you're not cooking with it constantly, give it a light trim every 2-3 weeks anyway to stimulate new growth.
Spring trim: In early spring — or whenever you notice the plant coming back to life after a slower winter — cut the entire plant back by up to one-third. This removes any winter woodiness or dead tips and triggers a flush of fresh, leafy growth for the season ahead.
Post-flowering trim: Thyme produces small, attractive lavender-pink flowers in late spring and summer. After the plant flowers and the blooms fade, cut it back by about one-third. This prevents the plant from putting energy into seed production and encourages a vigorous new flush of flavorful leafy growth.
Best time to harvest for flavor: Harvest in the morning, before midday heat builds up. This is when essential oil concentration in the leaves — the thymol and carvacrol that give thyme its characteristic flavor and antimicrobial properties — is at its highest. Overwintering Thyme Indoors
Thyme is one of the hardier culinary herbs and handles winter conditions better than basil or cilantro. That said, indoor thyme does need some adjustments to stay healthy through the winter months.
Reduce watering: Growth slows significantly in winter as day length shortens and light intensity drops. The plant uses far less water during this period. Water only once every 10-14 days, and always check soil moisture before watering rather than sticking to a fixed schedule. Overwatering in winter — when low light means slow growth and slow water use — is the most common way to lose an otherwise healthy thyme plant.
Maximize light: Move thyme to your brightest south-facing window for winter. If natural light is insufficient, set up a grow light on a timer for 14-16 hours daily. Light is the main challenge for indoor herbs in winter, and thyme is no exception — without sufficient light, it will decline even with perfect watering.
Bringing outdoor thyme inside for winter: If you moved thyme outside for the summer and are bringing it back in before frost, inspect it carefully first. Check under leaves and in dense growth for spider mites — they love the warm dry conditions of indoor heating and can establish rapidly once a plant moves inside. If possible, quarantine the plant briefly before placing it near other plants. A cool indoor location (55-65°F) is actually ideal for overwintering thyme — it doesn't need warmth, just enough light to survive.
Expectations for winter: Don't expect rapid growth. Thyme is effectively resting in winter. Occasional light harvests are fine, but don't cut back heavily until spring. Think of winter as a maintenance period — keep it alive and healthy, and it will reward you with strong growth come spring.
Common Problems
Thyme is generally a tough, low-maintenance plant once its basic needs are met. Most problems trace back to two causes: too much water or too little light. Here's a practical guide to the issues you're most likely to encounter:
Root Rot
The most common and most serious problem with indoor thyme. Symptoms: sudden wilting despite the soil being moist (or wet), yellowing and dropping leaves, brown mushy stems at the base. When you unpot the plant, roots are brown and mushy rather than white and firm. Caused by overwatering, poorly draining soil, or a pot sitting in standing water. Treatment: unpot immediately, cut away all dead and mushy roots with sterile scissors, allow to air dry for an hour, repot in fresh fast-draining mix (50% potting mix, 50% perlite), and reduce watering drastically going forward. Caught early, thyme can recover; left too long, root rot is fatal.
Grey Mold (Botrytis)
Fuzzy grey or brown growth on stems and leaves, typically starting where stems are damaged or where dead material has accumulated. Caused by high humidity combined with poor airflow. Treatment: improve air circulation (add a fan if necessary), remove all affected material immediately, reduce watering, and avoid wetting the foliage. Powdery Mildew
A white, powdery coating on leaves and stems. Like grey mold, it's encouraged by poor airflow and humid conditions. Treat with dilute neem oil solution or potassium bicarbonate spray. Improve airflow around the plant. Avoid wetting leaves when watering. Remove heavily affected growth.
Leggy, Sparse Growth
Long, stretched stems with widely-spaced small leaves and an overall thin, unhealthy appearance. Almost always caused by insufficient light. The plant is stretching toward any available light source. Woody Die-Back
As thyme ages, it naturally becomes more and more woody. This is a normal part of its growth cycle, not a sign of disease. However, once a plant is more than 50% woody stem with minimal green leafy growth remaining, it's time to renew it. Thyme propagates very easily from stem cuttings: take 3-4 inch cuttings from green (non-woody) stem tips, strip the lower leaves, and place in moist perlite or a glass of water. Spider Mites
Tiny moving dots on the undersides of leaves, often accompanied by fine webbing. Common in hot, dry indoor air — especially in winter when heating systems reduce humidity. Look closely with a magnifying glass if you suspect them. Treatment: wash the plant thoroughly with a strong jet of water, repeat regularly, apply insecticidal soap if the infestation persists. Aphids
Soft-bodied green, black, or white insects clustered on new growth and stem tips. Less common than spider mites on thyme. Wash off with water or apply insecticidal soap. Check for ants, which farm aphids — if ants are present outdoors, address them first.
