Why Light Is the Critical Factor for Herbs
Of all the variables in indoor herb growing — watering, soil, pot size, temperature — light is the one that most commonly determines success or failure. You can adjust watering frequency. You can repot into better soil. But if your apartment doesn't have a bright south-facing window and you're not using a grow light, certain herbs simply will not thrive, no matter what else you do.

Here's the key thing to understand about herbs: they don't just need light to survive — they need it to be flavorful. The aromatic compounds that make basil smell like basil, mint taste like mint, and rosemary taste like rosemary are essential oils produced in response to sunlight. Indoor herbs getting insufficient light will grow — sometimes vigorously — but they'll produce weak, watery leaves with a fraction of the flavor and aroma you'd get from a well-lit plant. The direction a window faces determines both the intensity and duration of direct sunlight entering the room. This is the most practical framework for deciding which herbs go where.
South-Facing Windows (Best for Most Herbs)
South-facing windows receive direct sunlight for the longest portion of the day — typically 6–8 hours in summer, less in winter. This is where your most light-demanding herbs belong: basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano, and sage. Place them right on the windowsill, as close to the glass as possible (but not touching it — glass can concentrate heat and cold).
East-Facing Windows (Good for Medium-Light Herbs)
East windows receive direct morning sunlight — typically 3–5 hours — and bright indirect light for the rest of the day. Morning sun is generally gentler than afternoon sun, making east windows excellent for mint, parsley, chives, and cilantro. These herbs appreciate the moderate light without the intense afternoon heat that can stress them.
West-Facing Windows (Works for Most Herbs)
West windows receive afternoon and early evening direct sunlight. The light is often more intense than morning light, and the associated heat can be an issue in summer. West windows work for most herbs and are especially good for herbs that like a bit of warmth: basil, thyme, and oregano can do well here, though ideally they'd have a south window.
North-Facing Windows (Very Limited Options)
North windows receive no direct sunlight — only indirect light reflected from the sky and surroundings. This is the lowest-light orientation in the northern hemisphere. Only chervil and mint can manage here, and even they'll be less vigorous than in a better-lit window. If your only window is north-facing, a grow light isn't optional — it's necessary for any culinary herb garden.
Signs Your Herbs Aren't Getting Enough Light

Leggy, Stretched Stems
The most obvious sign: stems grow long and spindly with large gaps between leaf nodes. This is called etiolation — the plant is literally stretching toward light. Basil becomes particularly leggy in low light, producing long stems with tiny leaves far apart rather than compact, bushy growth.
Pale or Yellowing Leaves

Duration: How Long to Run Grow Lights
Herbs don't receive 24 hours of light outdoors, and they shouldn't receive it indoors either. The recommended photoperiod for most culinary herbs under grow lights is 14–16 hours per day. Use a timer so the light turns on and off automatically — consistency matters. Allow 8–10 hours of darkness per cycle.
Intensity and Distance
Light intensity (measured in foot-candles, lux, or PPFD — photosynthetic photon flux density) drops dramatically with distance from the source. Spectrum

T5 Fluorescent Fixtures
T5 fluorescent lights have been the industry standard for indoor herb growing for decades. They produce excellent, even light distribution, run relatively cool, and are available in 2- and 4-foot fixture lengths that suit windowsill or countertop setups. They're less energy-efficient than LEDs but produce very reliable results. Run them 14–16 hours daily, positioned 2–4 inches above the herb canopy.
LED Grow Lights
Modern full-spectrum LED grow lights are the current best option for most home growers. They use less electricity than fluorescent lights, produce very little heat, last 50,000+ hours, and can be dialed to specific light spectra. Panel-style LED fixtures work well for countertop herb gardens; bar-style or strip LEDs are good for windowsills. Position them 4–8 inches above herbs and run for 14–16 hours daily.
What to Avoid
Standard incandescent or halogen bulbs produce mostly heat rather than useful light for plants. Standard household LED bulbs (A19 bulbs) don't have the right spectrum or intensity for herb growing. Avoid any light advertised as a "grow light" that doesn't specify full-spectrum output with blue and red wavelengths — cheap lights with only red LEDs or only blue LEDs don't work as well as full-spectrum options.
