Companion Plants for Peppers: Boost Yield and Repel Pests
Peppers are warm-season vegetables that share many of the same growing conditions and companion needs as tomatoes — their close Solanaceae relatives. The same aphid-deterrent, pollinator-attracting, and nematode-suppressing companions that benefit tomatoes work equally well for peppers. A few pepper-specific pests and considerations distinguish the most useful companions for this crop.
Peppers' Key Pest Pressures
Understanding pepper pest biology helps prioritise the most useful companions:
- Aphids: Multiple species colonise peppers, clustering on new growth and undersides of leaves. They vector plant viruses and weaken plants directly by sap removal.
- Thrips: Tiny insects that rasp leaf surfaces and distort new growth. In peppers, they also damage flowers and reduce fruit set. They are harder to control than aphids.
- Root-knot nematodes: Microscopic worms that form galls on pepper roots, blocking water and nutrient uptake. Common in warmer climates and repeated plantings in the same soil.

Best Companion Plants for Peppers
Basil — Aphid and Thrip Deterrence
Basil is as good a companion for peppers as it is for tomatoes — and for the same reasons. Both crops need identical conditions: minimum 18°C nights, full sun, consistently moist fertile soil. Basil's volatile aromatic compounds (linalool, eugenol) may disrupt the host-finding of aphids and thrips. Many pepper growers report lower thrip damage and fewer aphid colonies in beds where basil is interplanted.
Planting: One basil plant every 45–60 cm interspersed among pepper transplants. Both can go in the ground at the same time once temperatures are reliably warm.
French Marigolds — Nematode Protection
Root-knot nematodes are a serious problem in pepper beds, particularly where peppers have been grown repeatedly in the same location. French marigolds planted at high density (every 20–30 cm) around and within the pepper bed provide thiophene root exudates that reduce nematode populations. Rotating with a full season of marigold planting before a pepper crop effectively biofumigates the soil.
Carrots — Root Zone Diversification
Carrots growing between peppers complement rather than compete. Pepper roots are fibrous and concentrate in the upper 30–40 cm of soil. Carrot taproots extend much deeper, accessing different nutrient reserves and loosening compacted subsoil that can impede pepper root growth. Planting carrots between pepper transplants in spring provides a space-efficient harvest before peppers need their full root zone.
Spinach and Lettuce — Efficient Use of Space and Weed Suppression
Spinach, lettuce, and other cool-season greens planted between pepper transplants in spring create ground cover that suppresses weed germination and retains soil moisture. By the time the peppers are large enough to need the ground space and the summer heat makes lettuce bolt, the cool-season greens are ready to harvest and clear. This succession approach gives two crops from the same square metre.
Sweet Alyssum — Beneficial Insect Habitat
Sweet alyssum planted at the edges of pepper beds maintains populations of parasitoid wasps and hoverfly larvae that predate aphid colonies. This is particularly important for peppers because their leaf structure makes them vulnerable to aphid colonies building up in the dense canopy before detection. Beneficial insect populations established before aphid pressure peaks provide ongoing management without intervention.
Parsley — Parasitoid Wasp Support
Second-year parsley in flower produces ideal flowers for parasitoid wasps. A few parsley plants allowed to bolt and flower around the pepper bed complement sweet alyssum's beneficial insect attraction and broaden the range of wasp species supported.
Geraniums (Zonal Pelargoniums) — Thrip Management
Geraniums act as a trap crop for thrips — thrips preferentially colonise geraniums before moving to peppers. Monitoring and treating thrip-laden geraniums protects the pepper crop. This is an underused strategy particularly valuable in greenhouse pepper production, where thrip pressure can be severe.
