Tomato Companion Plants: Best and Worst Combinations
Tomatoes are the most widely grown home garden vegetable — and they attract more companion planting attention than almost any other crop. The tradition of planting basil with tomatoes is centuries old; the practice of surrounding tomatoes with marigolds is almost universal among experienced kitchen gardeners. Some of these pairings have solid scientific backing; others are beloved garden lore that has survived because it seems to work.
This guide separates the well-evidenced from the anecdotal, gives you practical spacing and planting guidance, and lists the plants you should keep away from your tomato bed.
Why Tomatoes Benefit from Companions
Tomatoes grown in pure monoculture face concentrated pest pressure — aphids, whitefly, tomato hornworm, spider mites, and nematodes all specialise in finding and exploiting tomato stands. A diverse planting surrounding tomatoes confuses pest insects, attracts their natural predators, and creates a soil environment less hospitable to root pathogens.
The Best Tomato Companions
1. French Marigolds (Tagetes patula) — The Most Evidence-Backed Choice
French marigolds are the tomato companion with the strongest scientific support. Their root exudates contain thiophene compounds — particularly alpha-terthienyl — that are toxic to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne species). Multiple peer-reviewed studies have confirmed significant nematode reduction in soil where French marigolds have grown.
How to use: Plant French marigolds at high density — every 20–30 cm throughout and around the tomato bed, not just as a border. At the end of the season, dig the marigold plants into the soil rather than composting them, releasing the compounds into the root zone. Grow for at least 2–3 months before the tomato season for maximum effect.
Note: Mexican marigolds (Tagetes erecta) are less effective for nematodes than French types. Calendula (pot marigold) is not related and does not provide the same nematode-deterrent effect.
2. Basil — The Traditional Favourite
Basil and tomatoes are the most famous companion planting pair. The evidence is largely anecdotal but remarkably consistent across gardeners: plantings with basil interplanted through tomato rows report reduced aphid and whitefly populations compared to tomato beds without basil.
The proposed mechanism is that basil's volatile aromatic compounds (linalool, eugenol, and others) interfere with the olfactory host-finding of aphids and whitefly. Whether this constitutes genuine pest deterrence or simply pest confusion and displacement is debated, but the practical result — fewer pest outbreaks — is reported widely enough to merit the practice.
How to use: Plant one basil plant every 45–60 cm between tomato plants. Both crops share identical growing needs (full sun, rich compost-amended soil, regular watering), making them highly compatible garden neighbours regardless of any pest-deterrent benefit.
3. Borage — The Pollinator Magnet
Borage (Borago officinalis) produces a continuous supply of star-shaped blue flowers that attract bees in unusually high numbers. Tomatoes are self-fertile but benefit significantly from bee pollination — the vibration of bee wings triggers pollen release through a process called buzz pollination. Borage near tomatoes increases the frequency of bee visits and can measurably improve fruit set.
Borage also accumulates calcium and other minerals in its leaf tissue. Allowed to self-seed and chopped as a mulch, it can contribute these minerals back to the soil over a season. Anecdotal accounts also claim it deters tomato hornworm — though controlled evidence for this specific effect is limited.
How to use: Plant two or three borage plants at the base of a tomato bed. Allow it to self-seed — it will naturalise in the garden and provide permanent pollinator habitat in subsequent years.
4. Parsley — Parasitoid Wasp Attractor
Parsley, when allowed to flower (which it does in its second year), produces clusters of small white flowers in the umbel family. These flat-headed flowers are ideal for the short mouthparts of parasitoid wasps, which cannot access tubular or complex flowers but are highly effective biological control agents for caterpillars, aphids, and whitefly.
Allow second-year parsley to go to flower around your tomato bed to maintain parasitoid wasp populations through the growing season. Dill, fennel (see caution below), cilantro, and carrots are all related umbels with similar effects.
5. Carrots — Root Zone Partnership
Carrots and tomatoes have complementary root architectures. Tomatoes root in the upper 30–45 cm of soil; carrots extend deeper, loosening compacted subsoil layers and improving drainage. Neither competes significantly with the other for nutrients. Tomatoes also provide light shade that prevents carrot shoulders from greening in the sun.
How to use: Sow carrot seeds at the base of young tomato plants in spring. By the time tomatoes need their full root space, carrots will be at a harvestable size.
6. Nasturtiums — The Aphid Trap Crop
Nasturtiums attract aphids preferentially — aphid populations colonise nasturtium before moving to tomatoes. Used as a trap crop at the garden's perimeter, nasturtiums intercept aphid infestations arriving from outside the garden. Monitor nasturtiums regularly; when aphid populations peak, treat (with soapy water spray) or remove the plants entirely along with the aphid colony.
Worst Companions for Tomatoes
Fennel — Keep It Isolated
Fennel releases allelopathic compounds from its roots that inhibit the germination and growth of many plants, including tomatoes. It also self-seeds aggressively and spreads in the garden. Grow fennel in an isolated container or at the far end of the garden, well away from tomatoes and most other vegetables.
Potatoes — Shared Disease Risk
Tomatoes and potatoes both belong to the Solanaceae family and share their most devastating disease: late blight (Phytophthora infestans). Growing them together or near each other creates a reservoir effect — if one crop becomes infected, the disease spreads rapidly to the other. Keep at least 3–5 metres between potato and tomato plantings.
Brassicas — Competing Heavy Feeders
Cabbage, broccoli, kale, and other brassicas are heavy nitrogen feeders that compete directly with tomatoes for soil nutrients. They also attract different pest complexes that can cross-infect. Separate brassica and tomato beds by at least one metre and a physical barrier where possible.
Corn — Shared Pest Vector
Corn and tomatoes share the corn earworm/tomato fruitworm — the same Helicoverpa zea moth that attacks corn kernels also attacks tomato fruit. A mixed planting concentrates both crops in one area and can result in higher pest pressure than either would experience in separate beds.
Tomato Companion Planting Layout
A practical approach for a 3 × 3 metre tomato bed:
- French marigolds as a dense border (every 20 cm) around the entire perimeter.
- Basil plants every 60 cm interspersed between tomato plants within the bed.
- One or two borage plants at the south (sunny) end for pollinator access.
- Nasturtiums planted 1 metre beyond the bed's edge as a trap crop buffer.
- Second-year parsley (flowering) placed near bed corners for parasitoid wasp habitat.
