Companion Plants for Pest Control: A Science-Backed Guide
Not all companion planting claims are equal. Some — like marigolds repelling nematodes — are supported by solid peer-reviewed research. Others — like the idea that planting basil makes tomatoes taste better — fall more into garden folklore than demonstrated fact. This guide focuses on the pest-control applications of companion planting where the evidence is strongest.
The good news: several companion planting strategies for pest control genuinely work, and they work through mechanisms we now understand well enough to apply strategically.
The Four Pest-Control Mechanisms
1. Root-Zone Chemical Deterrence (Allelopathy)
Some plants release compounds from their roots that are toxic or deterrent to soil-dwelling pests. French marigolds are the most researched example — their root exudates contain thiophene compounds lethal to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), which are among the most damaging soil pests for vegetable crops worldwide.
Research protocol: plant French marigolds at high density (every 20–30 cm) in the affected area, grow for 2–3 months, then till under. Nematode counts in treated soil dropped by 70–95% in controlled trials compared to untreated soil.
2. Volatile Compound Disruption (Olfactory Masking)
Many pest insects locate host plants by smell — they detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released by their host species. A garden planted in dense monoculture broadcasts these VOC signals clearly. A mixed planting dilutes and disrupts the signal, making host plants harder to locate.
Field studies on carrot fly (Psila rosae) demonstrated that interplanting carrots with onions or leeks reduced carrot fly infestation compared to carrot monoculture. The allium volatiles masked the carrot's own host-finding signals. Similar mechanisms are proposed (though less rigorously demonstrated) for basil/tomato and aromatic herb/brassica combinations.
3. Beneficial Insect Habitat (Conservation Biocontrol)
Parasitoid wasps and predatory hoverflies are highly effective natural pest control agents. Parasitoid wasps lay their eggs inside living aphids, caterpillar eggs, and whitefly — the larvae consume the pest from within, killing it. Hoverfly larvae feed voraciously on aphid colonies.
Both groups need adult food sources — they feed on nectar and pollen between prey events. They cannot access tubular flowers (evolved for long-tongued bees) or complex flowers. They need small, open, accessible flowers. The right companion flowers maintain these populations in your garden year-round, providing constant biological pest pressure.
4. Trap Cropping (Sacrificial Planting)
Trap crops are deliberately planted to attract pests away from the main crop. The strategy works because many pest insects have a strong host preference hierarchy — given a choice, they prefer the trap crop. Concentrating pests on the trap plant allows for targeted, localised intervention.
The Best Companion Plants for Pest Control
French Marigolds (Tagetes patula) — Nematodes
Target pest: Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.)
Evidence level: Strong (multiple peer-reviewed studies)
How to use: Plant at high density throughout the bed, not just as a border. Grow for at least 8 weeks before or alongside the main crop. At season end, till plants into the soil to release compounds into the root zone. For severe nematode infestations, plant an entire bed to marigolds for a full season as a "biofumigation" treatment before returning to vegetables.
Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) — Aphids
Target pest: Aphids (multiple species)
Evidence level: Moderate (consistent field observations, limited controlled trials)
How to use: Plant as a perimeter trap crop around valuable plantings. Aphids colonise nasturtium preferentially and in dense clusters. Monitor weekly. When aphid numbers peak on nasturtium, spray the nasturtium with dilute insecticidal soap, or pull and compost off-site. Do not let nasturtium aphid populations explode — they will eventually overflow to other plants.
Bonus: nasturtium flowers and leaves are edible with a peppery flavour. Allow some plants to self-seed for free trap crops in subsequent years.
Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima) — General Beneficial Habitat
Target mechanism: Parasitoid wasp and hoverfly attraction
Evidence level: Strong (published studies showing increased beneficial insect populations near alyssum)
How to use: Sow sweet alyssum thickly at the edges of vegetable beds and in gaps between plants. It grows quickly, stays low (15–25 cm), and blooms from late spring until frost. Its tiny white flowers bloom continuously and are among the most attractive to parasitoid wasps of any common garden plant.
Phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) — Pollinators and Beneficials
Target mechanism: Broad-spectrum beneficial insect attraction
Evidence level: Strong (extensively studied as a companion in commercial organic farming)
How to use: Sow directly in borders around the vegetable garden in early spring. Phacelia grows quickly and produces bright blue-purple flowers for 4–6 weeks. Sow in succession every 3–4 weeks for continuous bloom. Its flowers attract hoverflies, parasitoid wasps, bumblebees, and many native bee species in very high numbers.
Note: Phacelia can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Handle with gloves and wash hands after contact.
Dill (Anethum graveolens) — Parasitoid Wasps for Caterpillar Control
Target pest: Caterpillars (cabbage white, hornworm, loopers)

How to use: Allow dill to flower alongside brassicas. Dill's flat umbel flowers attract species of Cotesia and Trichogramma parasitoid wasps that are among the most effective biological agents against brassica caterpillars. A caveat: dill in its vegetative stage (before flowering) can temporarily inhibit tomato growth — plant away from tomatoes or wait until dill flowers before proximity matters.
Chives and Garlic — Aphids and Fungal Disease

Evidence level: Moderate
How to use: Plant chives throughout the vegetable bed as a permanent edible companion. Garlic cloves planted at the base of roses in autumn (for spring growth) are a traditional aphid-deterrent strategy. Allium volatiles (sulphur compounds) interfere with aphid host-finding and may have some antifungal properties in the root zone. Avoid planting near beans or peas, where allicin inhibits nitrogen fixation.
Lavender (Lavandula) — Aphids, Whitefly, Moths
Target pest: Aphids, whitefly, cabbage moths, carrot fly
Evidence level: Moderate
How to use: Plant as a border plant along vegetable beds. Lavender is not a monoseason annual like most trap crops — establish it as a permanent perennial border for years of benefit. Its flowers also attract bees and some predatory insects. Not suitable near beans (may inhibit growth) but excellent near brassicas, roses, and root vegetables.

Building a Pest-Control Companion Planting System
The most effective approach combines all four mechanisms into a layered system:
- Base layer — Permanent beneficials: Establish lavender, chives, and perennial herbs as semi-permanent border plants that provide year-round habitat and deterrence.
- Annual flowers — Beneficial insect habitat: Sow sweet alyssum and phacelia in succession from early spring through summer for continuous bloom.
- Soil treatment — Marigolds: Include French marigolds densely throughout every vegetable bed every season.
- Trap crops — Perimeter: Plant nasturtiums around the garden's edge as the first line of interception for incoming aphid populations.
- Integrated with main crops: Interplant aromatic herbs (basil, dill, sage) throughout the vegetable bed — not just at the edges.
