Succulents have a reputation for being nearly indestructible, which is mostly true — when their basic needs are met. But their drought tolerance also makes them easy to misjudge. They don't wilt and cry for water the way tropical plants do. Instead, they quietly deteriorate, often showing symptoms only when the damage is already advanced. The good news: most dying succulents can be saved when you identify the cause quickly and act on it.

Problem 1: Overwatering and Root Rot
This is the number one killer of succulents. More succulents die from too much water than from any other cause. Unlike drought-related stress, overwatering damage can progress rapidly and invisibly underground before symptoms appear above the soil line.
How to Identify It
- Leaves feel soft, mushy, or look transparent and waterlogged
- Leaves at the base drop off easily when touched
- The stem feels soft or spongy at the soil line
- Black or brown discoloration at the base of the stem
- Soil stays wet for more than 10–14 days
- Foul smell from the soil (a sign of anaerobic decomposition)
The Fix
- Remove the plant from its pot immediately. Don't wait.
- Shake off as much soil as possible and inspect the roots. Healthy roots are white or tan; rotted roots are brown, black, mushy, or smell bad.
- Trim away all rotted roots with clean scissors. If the rot extends into the stem, cut the stem above the rotted section — you can propagate the healthy top portion as a cutting.
- Let the plant air-dry in a shaded spot for 2–3 days so the cut ends callous over.
- Repot in completely fresh, dry succulent soil in a clean pot with drainage holes.
- Wait one full week before watering.

Problem 2: Insufficient Light
Succulents are sun-loving plants adapted to open, high-light environments. Most species need at least 6 hours of bright light daily. Insufficient light causes a cascade of problems: weakened cell walls, reduced ability to photosynthesize, and increased vulnerability to rot.
How to Identify It
- Pale, washed-out colour — green plants turn a lighter shade
- Stretching or leaning toward a light source
- Loose, open rosettes instead of tight, compact ones
- Leaves spaced further apart on stems than they should be (etiolation — see Problem 7)
- Slow or no growth even during the growing season
The Fix
Move the plant to the brightest spot in your home — ideally a south- or east-facing window. Acclimate it gradually if moving from deep shade to direct sun; sudden full sun can cause sunburn. Problem 3: Wrong Soil
Standard potting mix is designed to retain moisture — exactly the opposite of what succulents need. It's one of the most overlooked contributors to succulent problems, especially when combined with an indoor environment where evaporation is slow.
How to Identify It
- Soil still feels damp 2+ weeks after watering
- Soil compacts and becomes dense or crusty over time
- Roots look cramped and discoloured when you unpot the plant
- Recurring issues with root rot despite careful watering
The Fix
Repot into a proper succulent mix. Either buy a commercial cactus and succulent mix (and add extra perlite at a ratio of 1:1), or make your own by combining 50% regular potting soil with 50% coarse inorganic material — perlite, pumice, or coarse horticultural sand. The mix should feel gritty and drain water almost instantly when poured through it.
Problem 4: Pests
Succulents are less pest-prone than many houseplants, but two pests are particularly common and can cause serious damage: mealybugs and spider mites.
Mealybugs
Mealybugs appear as small white cottony clusters, typically in leaf joints and at the base of leaves. They feed on plant sap and excrete honeydew, which promotes sooty mould. They spread quickly to nearby plants. Treatment: dab individual bugs with a cotton swab soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol, then spray the entire plant with a diluted neem oil solution (1 tsp neem oil + a drop of dish soap per litre of water). Repeat weekly for 4 weeks.
Spider Mites
Spider mites are nearly invisible to the naked eye but leave fine webbing between leaves and cause stippling or tiny white/yellow dots on leaf surfaces. They thrive in dry, warm conditions. Treatment: isolate the plant immediately, rinse with water, then spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil solution every 5–7 days for 3–4 weeks. Increase humidity slightly during treatment.
Root Mealybugs
A sneaky variant that lives underground on roots. Symptoms include sudden wilting and decline despite good care. You'll only see the white waxy bugs when you unpot the plant. Treatment requires removing all soil, washing roots thoroughly, and repotting in completely fresh mix after a diluted insecticide root soak.
Problem 5: Temperature Extremes
Most succulents prefer temperatures between 15–30°C (60–85°F). At the extremes, they suffer in very different ways.
Frost and Cold Damage
Many succulents are not frost hardy. Temperatures below 4°C (40°F) cause ice crystals to form in leaf cells, rupturing them. Symptoms: mushy, translucent, blackened leaves — similar to overwatering but appearing suddenly after a cold night. Affected tissue cannot be saved; remove it cleanly and protect the plant. Some species (Sempervivum, certain Sedum) are cold hardy, but most popular varieties are not.
Heat Stress
Temperatures above 38°C (100°F) in direct sun — especially through glass — can cause bleaching, white or brown patches (sunscald), and wilting. Shade cloth or moving the plant away from a south-facing window during peak summer hours helps. Adequate watering during heatwaves is also important.
Problem 6: Root Bound Pot
Succulents that have been in the same pot for years can become root bound — roots fill the entire pot volume and start circling. While succulents can handle being slightly pot-bound, extreme root binding restricts water and nutrient uptake and causes slow decline.
How to Identify It
- Roots emerging from drainage holes
- Soil drying out unusually quickly after watering
- Plant looks top-heavy or seems to be pushing out of the pot
- Stunted growth despite good light and watering
The Fix
Repot into a container that is 2–3 cm (1 inch) wider than the current pot. Don't go dramatically larger — a pot too big for the root system holds excess moisture and increases rot risk. Spring is the best time to repot when roots are actively growing.
Problem 7: Etiolation (Stretching Toward Light)
Etiolation is what happens when a succulent reaches for light it isn't getting enough of. The plant elongates its stem rapidly, spacing leaves further apart, in a desperate bid to reach a light source. The result looks like the plant is stretching upward or leaning dramatically.
Etiolated growth cannot be reversed — the stretched portions will never become compact again. However, you can fix the appearance by cutting the top off the plant (leaving a rosette head with a few inches of stem), letting it callous, and re-rooting it in fresh soil. The remaining base will often produce new compact offshoots.

Problem 8: Natural Leaf Drop vs. Problem Leaf Drop
Not all leaf drop signals a problem. Understanding the difference saves a lot of unnecessary panic.
Natural Leaf Drop (Normal)
Succulents routinely shed their oldest, lowest leaves as they grow. These are the leaves closest to the soil, at the very base of the rosette. They turn yellow, then dry and papery, then fall off or detach with a light touch. This is normal housekeeping — the plant is recycling nutrients from old tissue. No intervention needed.
Problem Leaf Drop (Investigate)
- Middle or upper leaves dropping while still plump and green — likely overwatering or root rot
- Many leaves dropping rapidly — sudden environmental change, cold shock, or root damage
- Leaves dropping with pest evidence (webbing, cottony deposits) — pest infestation
- Mushy leaves falling from the base — overwatering or rot
