What Makes a Plant a Succulent?
A succulent is any plant that stores water in its leaves, stems, or roots as an adaptation to drought. The word comes from the Latin sucus (juice, sap). This water-storage strategy lets succulents survive weeks or months without rainfall — a trait they developed in arid environments from South African deserts to high-altitude Mexican plateaus.
Cacti are succulents — they store water in their swollen, ribbed stems and have evolved spines from modified leaves. Not all succulents are cacti, though. Aloe, Echeveria, Haworthia, Sedum, and hundreds of other genera store water in thick, fleshy leaves without being in the cactus family (Cactaceae).
Understanding this water-storage biology is the key to caring for succulents correctly. Their tissues are engineered to hold water. That means soggy soil — which keeps roots constantly wet — is the opposite of what they need. Their roots evolved to absorb water quickly after rain, then dry out completely between events. Replicating that cycle indoors is the entire game.
Light Requirements
Light is the first and most important factor in succulent care. Most succulents evolved in high-intensity sun environments — bright, direct light for 8–12 hours a day. Bringing them indoors reduces available light dramatically, even in a sunny room, which is why so many indoor succulents stretch, fade, and lose their compact form.
Ideal Indoor Light Positions
- South-facing window: Best option for most succulents. Maximum direct sun exposure indoors. Ideal for Echeveria, Sedum, most cacti, Crassula, and jade plants.
- East-facing window: Good morning sun, gentler afternoon shade. Works for most succulents and is excellent for species that burn easily (some Aloe, Gasteria).
- West-facing window: Intense afternoon sun — good for sun-lovers but can burn sensitive species in summer.
- North-facing window: Not enough light for most succulents. Only Haworthia and Gasteria tolerate this long-term, and even they prefer more light.
Signs of Insufficient Light
Etiolation is the term for what happens when a succulent doesn't get enough light: it stretches toward the light source, producing long gaps between leaves, a taller and thinner form, and paler color. This is the plant desperately reaching for more photons. Once etiolated, the stretched growth won't compact back — you can only propagate the healthy top portion and start over with better light.
Signs of Too Much Light
Succulents can sunburn, especially when moved suddenly from low light to intense direct sun. Signs: bleached white or beige patches on the sun-facing side of leaves, brown crispy tips, papery texture on affected tissue. Unlike etiolation, sunburn damage is permanent — those patches won't recover. Acclimate succulents gradually when increasing light exposure.
Grow Lights for Succulents
A full-spectrum LED grow light is an excellent solution for low-light homes. For succulents, run the light for 12–16 hours a day and position it 4–8 inches above the plant canopy. Succulents need more intense light than most houseplants — look for grow lights rated above 2,000 lux or 200 µmol/m²/s PPFD for best results.

Watering: The Soak and Dry Method
Overwatering kills more succulents than any other cause — including neglect. The most effective watering approach is called the soak-and-dry method, and it mimics the natural rainfall patterns succulents evolved to handle.
How the Soak-and-Dry Method Works
- Water thoroughly: Pour water slowly and evenly over the soil until water flows freely from the drainage hole. This saturates the entire root zone, not just the surface.
- Wait: Do not water again until the soil is completely dry — not just the surface, but all the way to the bottom of the pot. Insert a finger 2 inches into the soil or use a moisture meter.
- Repeat: In summer, this cycle takes 2–4 weeks. In winter, it can take 4–6 weeks or longer.
Watering Frequency by Season
- Spring and summer (growing season): Every 2–3 weeks on average, depending on pot size, soil, humidity, and temperature.
- Fall: Gradually reduce frequency as days shorten and temperatures drop.
- Winter: Once a month or less. Many succulents enter a semi-dormant state in winter and need very little water.
Signs of Overwatering
- Leaves become mushy, translucent, or yellow — they feel waterlogged rather than firm
- Lower leaves rot and fall off with little pressure
- Stem base feels soft or looks dark and mushy (root rot)
- Foul smell from the soil
Signs of Underwatering
- Leaves wrinkle, shrivel, or look deflated — they're depleting their water reserves
- Leaves feel soft and limp rather than plump and firm
- Lower leaves dry and shrivel (but stay attached, unlike overwatered leaves which drop)

Soil and Drainage
Succulent roots need soil that drains quickly and dries out between waterings. Standard potting mix is too moisture-retentive for most succulents — it holds water against the roots long enough to cause rot.
DIY Fast-Draining Mix
The most reliable approach is to amend regular potting mix with inorganic material that improves drainage without adding nutrients:
- 50% standard potting mix + 50% perlite: Reliable, widely available, works for almost all succulents.
- 50% potting mix + 50% coarse horticultural sand: Works well but avoid fine beach or play sand — the particles are too small and compact over time.
- Commercial cactus/succulent mix: Convenient, usually adequate. Many brands are still too moisture-retentive — add 20–30% extra perlite to improve drainage.
What to Avoid
- Garden soil (too dense, compacts, poor drainage)
- Standard potting mix alone (holds too much moisture)
- Mixes with added moisture-retaining crystals or gel
- Peat-heavy mixes (repel water when dry, then hold too much when wet)
Choosing the Right Pot
Pot material and drainage are the two non-negotiable factors. Everything else is preference.
Drainage Holes
Every succulent pot must have drainage holes. No drainage means water pools at the bottom, creating a reservoir of wet soil that roots sit in — the ideal environment for root rot. If you fall in love with a pot that has no holes, use it as a decorative outer cachepot and place the succulent in a plain pot with drainage inside it.
Terracotta vs. Other Materials
Terracotta is the gold standard for succulents. The porous clay walls allow moisture to evaporate through the sides, not just from the drainage hole, which speeds up the drying cycle between waterings. This passive moisture management provides a built-in buffer against overwatering.
Glazed ceramic and plastic pots are perfectly workable — just water less frequently than you would with terracotta, since soil dries more slowly in non-porous containers.
Pot Size
Don't over-pot succulents. A pot that's too large holds far more soil than the roots can absorb water from, which means the soil stays wet for too long between waterings. Choose a pot that's 1–2 inches wider than the plant's root ball. When repotting, go up only one pot size at a time.
Fertilizing Succulents
Succulents evolved in nutrient-poor soils and don't need heavy feeding. Over-fertilizing produces soft, weak growth that's more susceptible to pests and rot.
A light feeding schedule works well:
- Fertilize once a month during spring and summer only
- Use a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 or 5-5-5) diluted to quarter or half strength
- Or use a fertilizer specifically formulated for cacti and succulents (lower nitrogen)
- Stop fertilizing entirely from October through February
- Never fertilize a stressed, recently repotted, or dormant plant
Temperature and Hardiness
Most common succulent species prefer temperatures between 60–80°F (15–27°C) — a range that covers most indoor environments comfortably.
Cold Tolerance
Cold tolerance varies enormously by species. Tropical succulents (most Echeveria, string of pearls, many Aloe) will be damaged or killed by frost. Cold-hardy sedums and some Sempervivum survive freezing temperatures outdoors. As a rule: if a succulent is sold as a houseplant, assume it's frost-sensitive.
Keep succulents away from cold windowpanes in winter — the temperature at the glass can be 15–20°F colder than the room. Pull pots back from windows on very cold nights or add an insulating layer between the glass and the plant.
Heat
Most succulents handle heat well — it's their natural environment. Problems arise when heat is combined with low humidity and inadequate watering. In temperatures above 90°F, check soil moisture more frequently than usual.
When and How to Repot
Succulents need repotting when they outgrow their current pot or when the soil degrades over time (potting mix breaks down after 2–3 years, losing its drainage properties).
Signs It's Time to Repot
- Roots visible through drainage hole or curling around the soil surface
- Plant becomes top-heavy and tips over
- Soil dries out much faster than it used to (root-bound pot has little soil left)
- Slow or no growth despite good light and proper watering
- Soil is more than 2–3 years old
Best Time to Repot
Spring and early summer — the beginning of the growing season. Avoid repotting in winter when the plant is semi-dormant, and in summer heat when transplant stress is highest.
Repotting Process
- Stop watering 5–7 days before repotting so the soil is dry — roots release more easily from dry soil
- Gently remove the plant from its pot and shake off old soil from the roots
- Inspect roots — trim any that are brown, mushy, or shriveled with clean scissors
- Let the plant sit out of soil for 24–48 hours if any roots were cut (allows wounds to callous)
- Fill the new pot one-third with fresh fast-draining mix
- Position the plant and fill around the roots, pressing gently
- Wait 5–7 days before watering — the damaged roots need to callous first

Propagation Methods
Succulents are among the easiest plants to propagate — some species can grow an entire new plant from a single leaf. There are three main methods, each suited to different species.
Leaf Propagation
Works best for: Echeveria, Sedum, Graptopetalum, Pachyphytum.
- Gently twist a healthy, plump leaf from the stem — it must come off cleanly at the base with no tearing. Partial leaves won't propagate.
- Lay the leaf on top of barely moist cactus mix. Don't bury it — just rest it on the surface.
- Place in bright indirect light. Mist lightly every few days.
- In 2–8 weeks, a tiny rosette (the new plant) appears at the base. Pink thread-like roots emerge first.
- Once the new rosette is established, the original leaf withers and detaches naturally.
Stem Cuttings
Works for: most succulents, especially those that have etiolated, leggy stems, or offsets on long stems.
- Cut the stem with clean, sharp scissors — leave at least 2–3 inches of stem below the rosette
- Remove the lower leaves to expose 1–2 inches of bare stem
- Let the cut end dry and callous for 2–5 days
- Plant the calloused stem in dry cactus mix and wait 1–2 weeks before watering
Offset Division
Many succulents produce offsets (pups) — small plants that grow around the base of the mother plant. Wait until the offset is at least one-third the size of the parent before removing. Gently separate it from the parent with clean scissors or by hand. Let the wound dry briefly, then plant in its own pot.

Common Problems and Fixes
Root Rot
The most serious succulent problem — and the most common. Caused by overwatering in poorly draining soil. Signs: mushy, dark stem base; translucent, yellowing leaves; plant collapses. Treatment: remove from soil immediately, cut away all brown and mushy roots with sterile scissors, let the plant dry completely (24–48 hours), then repot in fresh dry cactus mix. Don't water for a week after repotting.
Etiolation (Stretching)
Caused by insufficient light. The plant grows taller with long gaps between leaves as it reaches for more light. Cannot be reversed. Cut the stretched stem, take the rosette top as a cutting, and start over in a better-lit spot.
Mealybugs
White cottony masses in the joints of leaves and stems — the most common succulent pest. Treat by dabbing each colony with a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Follow up with a neem oil spray. Repeat weekly for a month. Quarantine affected plants immediately.
Sunburn
White, beige, or brown papery patches on sun-facing leaf surfaces. Caused by moving a plant too quickly from low light to intense sun, or by afternoon summer sun through glass. Move the affected plant to slightly less intense light. The damaged tissue won't recover but new growth will be healthy.
Leaf Drop
Lower leaves naturally shrivel and drop as the plant grows — this is normal. Leaves that are mushy and drop with a touch indicate overwatering. Best Succulents for Beginners
Not all succulents are equally forgiving. These varieties tolerate the widest range of conditions and recover well from beginner mistakes:
- Haworthia: The most shade-tolerant succulent. Survives east or even north windows. Rarely gets pests. Perfect for offices and low-light apartments.
- Aloe vera: Practical and attractive. Tolerates moderate neglect, produces useful gel, and grows steadily with minimal care.
- Echeveria: The classic rosette succulent. Hundreds of varieties, all beautiful. Needs a sunny window but forgives occasional missed waterings.
- Jade plant (Crassula ovata): Long-lived, tree-like, extremely forgiving of drought and neglect. Can live for decades.
- Sedum: Fast-growing, produces many offsets, propagates easily. Tolerates a wide range of conditions.
- Zebra plant (Haworthiopsis fasciata): Striking white-banded leaves, tolerates low light, rarely needs repotting.
