Three Sisters Companion Planting: Corn, Beans, and Squash

Of all the companion planting traditions in world agriculture, none is more elegant or more thoroughly tested than the Three Sisters. Developed by Indigenous peoples of North America — particularly the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) confederacy and many other nations — the polyculture of corn, beans, and squash has fed populations for over 3,000 years. It is a closed ecological loop: each plant gives something the others need, and together they are more productive than any would be alone.

Modern agroecological research has confirmed and explained the traditional mechanisms. The Three Sisters works, and this guide shows you exactly how to replicate it in your garden.

How the Three Sisters Work Together

Corn: The Architecture

Corn provides the vertical structure — a tall, strong stalk that serves as a living trellis for climbing beans. By the time beans need to climb, corn stands 1–2 metres tall with a sturdy stem able to support considerable bean vine weight. Without corn, beans would need artificial supports. With corn, nothing is wasted and no materials are needed.

Beans: The Nitrogen Engine

Beans fix atmospheric nitrogen through their symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria in root nodules. These bacteria convert nitrogen gas (N₂, which makes up 78% of the atmosphere) into ammonium (NH₄⁺), a form plants can use. Some of this nitrogen is exuded directly into the surrounding soil during the growing season; more is released when bean plants die and their nitrogen-rich roots and foliage decompose.

Corn and squash are both heavy nitrogen users. In a monoculture, they deplete soil nitrogen rapidly and require heavy synthetic fertiliser inputs. With beans interplanted, the nitrogen cycle partially closes — beans replenish what corn and squash consume.

Squash: The Ground Cover

Squash plays the most visually dramatic role: its large, rough, prickly leaves spread at ground level and perform three functions simultaneously:

  1. Weed suppression: The dense leaf canopy shades the soil, preventing weed germination and growth.
  2. Moisture retention: Shaded soil loses moisture far more slowly. In traditional gardens without irrigation, this was critical during dry spells.
  3. Pest deterrence: The rough, bristly texture of squash leaves and stems deters raccoons, deer, and some insects from walking through the planting.

Choosing Your Three Sisters Varieties

Corn

Traditional Three Sisters plantings used field corn (dent corn) or flint corn grown for grain and drying — varieties that reach 2–2.5 metres tall with very strong stalks. For a modern kitchen garden, sweet corn varieties work well, though they are shorter (1.5–2 m) and their stalks are slightly less sturdy.

Beans

Pole (climbing) beans are essential — they need the corn stalk to climb. Bush beans miss the structural relationship and are better grown separately.

  • Rattlesnake Pole: Traditional Appalachian variety; vigorous climber, excellent flavour, distinctive mottled pods.
  • Cherokee Trail of Tears: Historically significant Black bean; very vigorous climber.
  • Scarlet Runner: Ornamental red flowers; also edible. Nitrogen-fixer like all beans.
  • Blue Lake Pole: Widely available, reliable, classic flavour for fresh eating.
  • Borlotti (Cranberry) Pole: Beautiful red-speckled pods; excellent dried.

Squash

Any large-leafed, sprawling squash works. Winter squash varieties are traditional (they last in storage after harvest), but summer squash and courgettes can be used. The leaf size and spread is the key function — bigger leaves provide better weed suppression.

  • Hubbard squash: Large, sprawling, very traditional Three Sisters choice.
  • Delicata squash: More compact habit; good for smaller spaces.
  • Buttercup or Butternut: Widely available; excellent for storage.
  • Pumpkin varieties: Large Atlantic Giant for maximum leaf suppression; sugar pumpkins for eating.

Planting the Three Sisters: Step by Step

When to Plant

The Three Sisters must be planted in sequence, not simultaneously:

  1. Week 0 (after last frost, soil ≥15°C): Plant corn.
  2. Week 2–3 (when corn is 10–15 cm tall): Plant beans around corn.
  3. Week 4–5 (when beans have germinated and established): Plant squash.

Staggering prevents beans from germinating before corn has height — otherwise beans would climb the ground and neighbouring squash rather than corn stalks.

Mound Preparation

Traditional Three Sisters plantings used raised mounds, and this remains the recommended approach:

  1. Build a flat-topped mound 30–45 cm high and 60 cm in diameter, spaced 90 cm–1.2 m centre-to-centre from the next mound.
  2. Enrich each mound with well-rotted compost — the Three Sisters are hungry plants.
  3. Water mounds well before planting and ensure the area has access to full sun all day.

Planting Densities

  • Corn: 4–6 seeds per mound in a circular arrangement, 20–25 cm from the mound centre. Thin to 3–4 strongest plants once established.
  • Beans: Plant 4–6 beans per mound, midway between corn plants (they will grow toward and up the corn stalks).
  • Squash: Plant 3–4 seeds per mound at the mound's outer edge. Thin to 1–2 strongest plants. Allow vines to sprawl outward to cover ground between mounds.

Modern Adaptations

Small Garden Version

For a garden with limited space, use a single large mound (90 cm × 90 cm) with 3 corn plants, 3 beans, and 1 squash plant. Dwarf sweet corn varieties (1–1.2 m) reduce the footprint while still providing climbing support.

Adding a Fourth Sister

Some gardeners add a "Fourth Sister" — sunflowers — around the perimeter of a Three Sisters planting. Sunflowers attract pollinators, provide additional structure for beans to climb, and their seeds attract birds that eat insect pests. Their strong taproot also loosens hard subsoil.

Sweet alyssum and phacelia as edge plantings attract parasitoid wasps and hoverflies, adding a pest-control dimension to the nutritional and structural benefits of the original three.

Container Three Sisters

A very large container (at least 60 cm in diameter and 45 cm deep) can support a miniature Three Sisters planting. Use a dwarf corn variety, a compact pole bean, and a small-fruited squash like 'Patio Star' or a baby courgette. Results are not as dramatic as in the ground, but the ecological relationships are the same.
