How Pebble Trays Work

How to Set Up a Pebble Tray

Step 3: Add Water — But Not Too Much
This is the critical step. Fill the tray with water to a level that is just below the top surface of the pebbles. The water should not reach the pot. The pebbles hold the pot above the water line, so roots and drainage water are always above the water, not in it.
If you let the water level rise above the pebbles — even briefly — the pot will sit in standing water. Roots will wick up the moisture, leading to root rot. Check and maintain the water level regularly, especially in hot, dry conditions when evaporation is fast.
Step 4: Set the Pot
Place the plant's pot (with drainage holes) directly on the pebble surface. Confirm it sits stably and the base of the pot does not touch water. That's it — the system is running. Check the water level when you water your plants; it's an easy habit to combine.
Maintenance
Every 2–4 weeks, rinse the tray and pebbles with clean water to prevent algae, mineral buildup, and mosquito larvae. If you notice green algae forming, add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) to the water, or simply scrub and rinse the tray thoroughly. Empty, wash, and refill fully once a month.
When Pebble Trays Help Most
Despite their modest humidity-raising ability, pebble trays provide the most benefit in specific situations:
