What Is Etiolation?
Etiolation (pronounced ee-tee-oh-LAY-shun) is the scientific term for the pattern of growth produced by plants in insufficient light. It's one of the most fundamental plant survival responses — but in the context of houseplants, it's a problem we want to prevent and reverse.
When a plant doesn't receive enough light for photosynthesis, it makes an evolutionary trade-off: instead of producing dense, compact growth, it redirects energy into cell elongation in stems, stretching toward whatever light source is available. The goal is to reach better light. The result: long, spindly stems with large gaps between leaf nodes (internodes), smaller and paler leaves (because there's not enough light to sustain large chlorophyll-rich leaves), and often a pronounced lean toward the light source.
The key characteristics of etiolated growth:
- Long internodes: Large gaps between leaf attachment points along the stem. Healthy compact growth has short internodes — leaves are clustered closely. Etiolated growth has stretched internodes — leaves are spaced far apart.

Too far from a window: Light intensity drops dramatically with distance from a window. A plant positioned 2–3 meters from a window may receive only 5–10% of the light available immediately beside that window. Wrong light direction: A plant receiving light from only one side will lean heavily toward that side. Each part of the plant gets adequate light only when facing the source, and the shaded side produces progressively leggier growth. - Long internodes: The clearest sign. Compare new growth to old growth — if new leaves are emerging far apart on the stem, the plant needs more light.

Step 1: Move to Better Light
This is the only way to stop new etiolated growth from forming. Until you address the light, the plant will continue producing leggy stems regardless of any other action you take.
Target light conditions for most tropical houseplants: Bright indirect light — meaning close to a window (within 1–2 meters) but not in direct afternoon sun. North-facing windows with no obstruction work for lower-light tolerant plants. East-facing windows provide ideal gentle morning sun. Acclimation: A plant that has been in low light for some time should be moved to brighter light gradually. Step 2: How to Prune Leggy Plants

New growth from those stems will be compact, but the existing bare stem sections remain bare.
Pruning is how you restore compact, bushy shape. When you cut a stem, the plant responds by activating dormant buds at the node just below the cut, typically producing two new shoots from that point. This branching response is what creates bushy growth.
How to prune leggy stems:

Step 3: Use Cuttings to Propagate New Plants
The stem sections you prune off don't have to go in the bin. Leggy stems are, in most cases, perfectly viable propagation material. Even if the internodes are long and the stem looks scraggly, as long as there are healthy nodes on the stem, the cutting can root.
Each node on a stem cutting is a potential rooting and growing point. A long leggy pothos vine, for example, might yield 4–6 individual cuttings each with 2–3 nodes. Which Plants Get Leggy Most Easily?
