When to Repot (Signs It's Time)
Repotting is essential maintenance — a plant that has outgrown its pot can't absorb enough water or nutrients to thrive. But repotting at the wrong time, into the wrong size pot, or without proper aftercare can cause significant transplant stress and set a plant back by weeks or months. Understanding when to repot is the first step to doing it well.
The key signs that a plant needs repotting: roots growing from drainage holes at the base of the pot (especially multiple dense roots, not just one or two exploratory ones); roots visibly circling the inside of the pot when the plant is unpotted; plant drying out very rapidly — if a plant that previously needed watering every 10 days now dries out in 2–3 days, it's likely root-bound; growth that has slowed or stopped entirely in spring and summer despite good conditions; a root-to-soil ratio where the pot looks mostly roots when you tip it out; and the plant becoming top-heavy and tipping over regularly.

What You Need
Having everything prepared before you start makes the process faster and less stressful for the plant — roots should spend as little time exposed to air as possible. Gather the following before you begin.
- New pot: 2–4cm (approximately one pot size) larger than the current pot, with drainage holes. Non-negotiable.
- Fresh potting mix: appropriate for the specific plant type (see section below)
- A trowel or large spoon: for adding and pressing down mix
- Newspaper, a tray, or an old sheet: to work on — repotting is messy
- Scissors or pruning shears: sterilised with isopropyl alcohol for trimming damaged roots
- Optional: gloves, a chopstick or pencil for loosening roots, rooting hormone powder for damaged root surfaces
Choosing the Right New Pot
Drainage holes are entirely non-negotiable. A pot without drainage cannot repot into — roots sitting in water without any exit will rot within weeks regardless of watering habits. If you have a decorative pot you love that lacks drainage, use it as an outer cache pot and keep the plant in a plain nursery pot with drainage holes placed inside it.
Size is critical. Choose a pot that is only 2–4cm wider in diameter than the current pot. Sizing up dramatically — choosing a pot twice the current size because you want the plant to grow faster — is one of the most common and damaging repotting mistakes. In a pot much larger than the root ball, the excess volume of soil around the roots stays wet for extended periods. Roots cannot reach or process that distant moisture, which creates persistently waterlogged zones where pathogens thrive. Overwatering symptoms develop even in carefully watered plants. Material matters based on the plant's watering needs. Terracotta is porous — it allows moisture to evaporate through the pot walls as well as through drainage holes, drying out faster than plastic. This is ideal for drought-tolerant plants (succulents, cacti, snake plants, ZZ plants) where faster drying prevents overwatering. Plastic and glazed ceramic retain moisture significantly longer, which suits moisture-loving plants (ferns, calathea, peace lily) that need consistent moisture without ever fully drying out. Choosing the Right Potting Mix
The soil a plant grows in affects drainage, aeration, moisture retention, and nutrient availability. Using the wrong mix is as damaging as choosing the wrong pot size. The golden rule: never use garden soil in pots. Garden soil compacts in containers without the aeration that earthworms provide in beds, creating a heavy, drainage-poor medium that suffocates roots. Always use a dedicated indoor potting mix.
For most tropical houseplants (pothos, monstera, philodendron, rubber plant, peace lily), a good-quality peat- or coco coir-based potting mix with 20–30% perlite added is ideal. The perlite improves drainage and prevents compaction over time. For succulents and cacti, use a dedicated cactus and succulent mix or add 50% perlite to standard mix. For orchids, use dedicated orchid bark — they don't grow in soil at all in their natural habitat. Step-by-Step Repotting Guide
Follow these steps in order. The whole process typically takes 10–15 minutes for a medium-sized plant.
Step 1: Water the Plant 24 Hours Before
Water your plant thoroughly the day before repotting. Moist roots are more pliable and significantly less likely to break or sustain damage during handling. Dry, brittle roots fracture easily. Thoroughly hydrated roots also experience less transplant stress because the plant enters the process in good condition rather than already stressed by drought.
Step 2: Prepare the New Pot
Add a layer of fresh potting mix to the bottom of the new pot — enough so that when you place the plant in, its root ball sits at the correct height with the soil surface 2–3cm below the pot rim. You don't need a drainage layer of gravel or stones at the bottom — this is a common but outdated recommendation. Gravel at the base actually creates a "perched water table" that raises the level of saturated soil higher into the root zone. A thin layer of potting mix is fine.
Step 3: Remove the Plant from Its Old Pot
Tip the pot sideways and support the base of the plant's stems with one hand while gently easing the pot off with the other. For a plant that fits in your hands, you can tip it upside down and tap the base of the pot. For larger plants in plastic pots, gently squeeze the sides of the pot around the entire circumference to loosen the root ball from the walls. For very stuck plants in ceramic or terracotta, run a thin knife around the inner edge between roots and pot wall, then try again.
Step 4: Inspect the Roots
Before doing anything else, look at the roots and smell the soil. Healthy roots are white, cream, or light tan in colour and have a clean, earthy smell. Unhealthy roots are brown or black and soft or mushy, and may smell sour, sulphurous, or rotten. If you find significant brown, mushy roots, you have a root rot situation that needs addressing before repotting. Trim all rotted roots (see Special Cases below and our root rot guide). If roots are white and healthy, proceed.
Step 5: Loosen the Root Ball
Gently loosen the root ball with your fingers or a chopstick, working from the outside inward. The goal is to untangle any roots that are circling tightly — these circling roots, if left to continue, can eventually girdle themselves and restrict water and nutrient transport. You don't need to remove all the old soil. Disturbing about one-third of the root ball is sufficient — enough to loosen circling roots and integrate new soil, without the full shock of a complete soil replacement.
Step 6: Trim Damaged Roots
Using sterilised scissors or pruning shears, trim any roots that are clearly dead (brown, dry, crispy), rotted (brown, black, mushy), or excessively long and tangled. Clean cuts heal faster than ragged tears. Sterilisation matters — cutting tools can transmit pathogens between plants if not cleaned between uses. Wipe blades with isopropyl alcohol before use.
Step 7: Place the Plant in the New Pot
Place the plant in the centre of the new pot at the correct depth. The soil surface should be at the same level relative to the stem as it was in the old pot. Do not bury the stem deeper than it was before — this can cause stem rot. If the plant is sitting too low, add more mix to the base layer. If sitting too high, remove some.
Step 8: Fill Around with Fresh Mix
Add fresh potting mix around the root ball, filling the gap between the roots and pot walls. Use a trowel or your fingers to press the mix down gently as you go, eliminating air pockets. Air pockets leave roots suspended without contact with the growing medium, preventing water and nutrient absorption. Don't pack the soil so hard that drainage is impeded — firm is enough.
Step 9: Water Lightly to Settle
Water gently but thoroughly, just enough to settle the fresh mix and help it make full contact with the roots. You're not fully watering at this point — just settling. If the soil level drops significantly after watering, add more mix to bring it back to the correct height.
Step 10: Move to Bright Indirect Light
Place the repotted plant in bright indirect light, away from direct sun for at least 1–2 weeks. Transplant stress temporarily reduces a plant's ability to manage high light levels, and direct sun during this period can cause leaf scorch and accelerate water loss through transpiration at exactly the time when roots are still re-establishing their water uptake capacity.
Aftercare: What to Do After Repotting
The 4–6 weeks following repotting are the recovery period. During this time, the plant is re-establishing its root system in new growing medium, and the way you manage it makes a significant difference to how quickly and completely it recovers.
Do not fertilize for 4–6 weeks after repotting. Fresh potting mix typically contains slow-release fertilizer from the manufacturer. Adding more fertilizer on top of root damage (the minor damage inevitable in any repotting, even done perfectly) can burn tender new roots. Wait until you see clear new growth — new leaves or stems — before resuming any fertilizer regime.
Expect some temporary wilting or drooping after repotting — this is normal transplant shock and typically resolves within a few days as roots re-establish contact with the new medium. Some leaf drop is also normal, particularly in plants like ficus that are sensitive to any environmental change. Don't be alarmed by the loss of one or two lower or older leaves. This is the plant redirecting its resources toward root re-establishment and new growth rather than maintaining existing leaves.
New growth — new leaf buds, new stems, visible growth at the tips — is the best sign that repotting was successful. Most plants show clear signs of recovery within 2–4 weeks. Continue with normal watering (checking soil moisture before each watering), maintain consistent indirect light, and avoid any major changes to conditions during the recovery period.
Special Cases: Root Rot, Very Root-Bound Plants, Large Plants
Root Rot
If root inspection reveals significant brown, black, or mushy roots, you have root rot that must be treated before repotting into fresh soil. Trim all rotted roots back to healthy white tissue using sterilised scissors. Treat cut surfaces with diluted hydrogen peroxide (3% H2O2 solution). Very Root-Bound Plants
When a root ball has become completely solid — a dense mass with no visible soil, roots matted together across the entire surface — you have two options. Repot into the next size up as described, spending extra time loosening the root mass before placing in the new pot. Alternatively, divide the plant if it's a species that divides well (spider plants, peace lilies, calathea, most clumping grasses) — splitting the root ball into two or more sections and potting each separately gives each division room to grow and effectively renews the whole plant.
Large Floor Plants
Floor plants that have grown to 1–1.5m or more can be impractical to repot — the pot and root mass may be too heavy to handle, and moving the plant during repotting creates as much stress as the repotting itself. In this situation, "top-dressing" is a practical alternative: remove the top 5–8cm of old soil from the surface of the pot carefully without disturbing the roots beneath, and replace with fresh potting mix. This refreshes the growing medium's nutrient content and improves surface drainage without the disruption of full repotting. Top-dress annually for large plants that you can't practically repot.
