All-Season Interest in a Compact Loquat
This small evergreen tree provides all-season interest, pest resistance, and low maintenance. The Bronze Loquat is a Taiwan and South Vietnam-native tree that grows to around 15-25 feet tall and wide. If you want a low-maintenance, long-interest tree, the Bronze Loquat might be what you need.
In early spring, this tree produces small, white flowers that are sweetly fragrant. The flowers are later replaced by small, orange-yellow fruits. They are inedible, but birds, squirrels, and other animals enjoy them.
The Bronze Loquat’s foliage is bright copper in early spring. It turns to dark green in late summer. These long, shiny leaves grow about 8-12 inches long. They give the Bronze Loquat its signature look.
It’s great as a focal point, accent piece or for creating a privacy screen or hedge. Its compact, rounded shape is great for tight spaces or containers. You can trim and shape it as you like.
The Bronze Loquat is generally free of pests and resistant to deer. It is both low maintenance and easy to care for. Simply plant in full to part shade or full shade for best growth in well-draining soil.

Planting & Care
1. Planting: First, select a spot where the tree will be in full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day) and has plenty of open space. Keep trees at least 25 feet from structures, sidewalks, and driveways. Unless you plan to control the tree’s size by pruning. And it’s always good to ensure your area has well-draining soil.
When you’re ready to plant, make the hole three times wider than the root ball and three times as deep. Place the tree in the hole, and hold it straight as you backfill with the native soil that was removed. Finally, water to settle the roots and spread a 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch around the area.
If you’re planting in a container, pick a pot that’s twice as large as your plant’s shipped container. Use well-balanced potting soil. Place your tree, backfill, and water. Then, place your Loquat in front of a sunny window indoors or in a sun-soaked spot on your porch.
2. Watering: Your new Loquat will benefit from a watering every other day for the first week. Then, 1 to 2 times a week for the first two months. Make sure to water once a week, and more during extended periods of drought. During the rainy season, you should not need to water the tree at all.
For indoor Loquats, simply check the soil with your index finger. If the soil is dry about 3 inches down, water your Loquat tree.
3. You will need to feed your loquat tree three times a year. Use lawn fertilizer. Use one cup of the fertilizer. Divide it into three applications over the growing season. For the second and third years, increase the amount to 2 cups, spread the fertilizer on the ground, and then water.
You can use an organic method of feeding the tree. Use 2 to 3 pounds of aged manure, 2 tablespoons of greensand, and a tablespoon of rock phosphate.
4. Pruning is important early on. The Loquat will benefit from trimming the branch tips every two months. Keeping them under 3 feet forces the loquat to sprout more branches. This, in turn, makes more surfaces for growth. And remove dead twigs, branches, and leaves as early as possible.
