Why String of Pearls Propagation Usually Fails
String of pearls (Senecio rowleyanus, recently reclassified to Curio rowleyanus) has a reputation for being notoriously difficult to propagate. I've killed my share of cuttings, and I've watched otherwise experienced plant propagators fail at string of pearls repeatedly.
After working through this many times, I've identified the pattern. It almost always comes down to the same two mistakes:
- Overwatering the cutting before roots form. String of pearls is native to arid, rocky areas of southwest Africa. It is among the most drought-tolerant of all popular houseplants. An unrooted cutting in moist soil — even slightly moist — is a cutting that is rotting. You must treat it with the same near-neglect you'd give a cactus cutting.
- Not letting the cut end callus. Any cut on a succulent, including string of pearls, must be allowed to dry and form a callus (a dried, sealed surface) before contacting soil. Without callusing, the moist wound surface is immediately exposed to soil bacteria and begins to rot before roots have any chance to form.
Fix these two issues and your success rate goes from near-zero to reliably good. Everything else is secondary.
What You Need
- Clean scissors or a sharp blade
- A very well-draining cactus and succulent mix — or pure perlite
- A small pot or tray with drainage holes
- A spray bottle for misting
- Bright indirect light (a sunny windowsill, but not harsh direct afternoon sun on the unrooted cutting)
- Patience — this is a slow process
What you do NOT need: rooting hormone (optional but not necessary), a humidity dome (string of pearls actually doesn't benefit from high humidity — it's an arid plant), a heat mat (helpful but not essential), or any special equipment.
Step-by-Step: Stem Cuttings (Vertical Method)
This method plants the cutting vertically with the stem in the soil — similar to how you'd propagate most succulents or Pothos, but with much drier conditions.
1. Choose Your Cuttings Carefully
Only take cuttings from a healthy, actively growing string of pearls. This means:
- The parent plant is in a sunny location and watered correctly (infrequently)
- The pearls are plump, firm, and round — not shriveled, wrinkled, or soft
- The stem itself is green and pliable, not yellowed or brown
Shriveled or wrinkled pearls indicate a stressed plant. A cutting from a stressed parent has less stored energy and will root far less reliably than one from a plump, healthy strand.
2. Take the Cutting
Cut a strand 10–15cm long. Each strand should have at least 10–15 plump pearls. The pearls store water and nutrients that sustain the cutting during the rooting period. Fewer pearls = less stored energy = lower success rate.
Make the cut with a clean blade. A single clean cut is better than crushing the stem with blunt scissors.
3. Callus the Cut End
This step cannot be skipped. Lay the cutting on a piece of dry paper, cut-end exposed to air, for at least 30–60 minutes. If you can wait 2–4 hours, even better. The cut will dry and form a visible slight hardening at the wound site. This callus prevents bacterial rot from the soil making immediate contact with the wound.
4. Prepare the Cutting for Planting
Remove the bottom 2–4 pearls from the cut end to expose 2–3cm of bare stem. This bare stem section is what goes into the soil — just like how you'd strip leaves from the lower section of a Pothos cutting before placing in water.
You can also optionally remove pearls at 2–3 points further up the strand (not just at the bottom). These wound points can also generate roots when in contact with soil — but don't overdo it. Too many removed pearls weakens the cutting.
5. Plant in Dry, Gritty Mix
Fill your pot with completely dry cactus and succulent mix — or pure perlite. Don't moisten it first. The medium must be dry when the cutting goes in.
Make a small hole with a pencil and insert the bare stem section 2–3cm deep. Curl any excess strand gently around the surface of the soil — you can pin loose loops lightly against the soil surface with bent wire or hair pins (see Lay-Flat Method below for more on this).
6. Wait Before First Watering
Do not water for the first 5–7 days. The pearls have stored water sufficient to sustain the cutting. Watering during this period introduces moisture to the wound before callus protection has fully developed, dramatically increasing rot risk.
7. First and Subsequent Waterings
After 5–7 days, mist very lightly using a spray bottle. Dampen only the top 1–2cm of the mix. Let this dry out completely (typically 5–7 days) before the next misting.
Continue this very sparse watering routine until the tug test confirms rooting (3–5 weeks).
The Lay-Flat Method (Alternative Approach)
The lay-flat method involves laying entire strands horizontally on the surface of the soil and pinning them down at intervals. Where the strand touches the soil, roots emerge from the stem nodes between pearls.
This method is particularly effective for creating a full, cascading effect quickly — and it mimics how string of pearls propagates naturally in its native habitat, where strands trail along the ground and root wherever they contact the soil.
Step by Step
- Cut strands 10–20cm long and let cut ends callus for 30–60 minutes.
- Fill a wide, shallow pot (a terracotta bulb pan or similar) with very dry, gritty cactus mix.
- Lay strands on the surface of the dry mix in a coiled or spiral pattern, or side by side.
- Pin strands to the soil surface every 3–5cm using bent wire, hair pins, or small stones. The strand must be in contact with the soil surface — suspended or loose sections won't root.
- Mist very lightly. Let dry. Mist again in 5–7 days.
- Roots form at pinned contact points in 3–5 weeks. Once the strand resists a gentle tug, it's rooted at that point.
- Once rooted throughout, the trailing ends can be allowed to cascade over the edge of the pot.
Soil and Drainage Requirements
String of pearls is one of the most drainage-demanding plants in popular houseplant keeping. Its natural habitat is rocky, nearly soil-free terrain where water is scarce and drains almost instantly. To replicate this:
- Best medium for propagation: Pure perlite. Nothing drains faster and it's nearly impossible to overwater. Supplement with liquid fertilizer once roots form.
- Second best: Cactus mix + 50% extra perlite or coarse horticultural sand.
- Acceptable: Commercial cactus mix with significant added perlite (at least 40% of the total volume).
- Not suitable: Standard potting compost, peat-based mixes, anything that stays moist for more than a day or two. These will rot your cuttings before roots form.
Container: terracotta is strongly preferred over plastic. Terracotta is porous and allows moisture to evaporate through the walls — critically important for a plant that rots so readily. A small terracotta pot dries out in 2–3 days, which is closer to string of pearls' natural experience than a plastic pot that retains moisture for 1–2 weeks.
Drainage holes: non-negotiable. Never propagate string of pearls in any container without drainage holes.
The Watering Rules That Matter Most
String of pearls propagation lives and dies by its watering schedule. These rules are different from almost every other propagation method you might know:
- No water for the first 5–7 days. The pearls have stored enough water for this period.
- When you do water, mist lightly. You are dampening the top centimeter of soil, not soaking the pot.
- Wait until completely dry between waterings. In summer in a warm room, this might be every 5–7 days. In winter in a cool room, every 10–14 days or longer.
- Plump pearls = don't water. Wrinkled pearls = water lightly.
- Shriveling that reverses after watering = normal thirst.
- Mushy pearls or stem = rot = too much water. Trim back to healthy tissue, let callus again, restart.
How to Use Multiple Cuttings for a Fuller Plant
One of the best-kept secrets in string of pearls propagation is that commercial pot plant suppliers always use multiple cuttings per pot to produce the full, lush hanging displays seen in garden centers. A single cutting produces a single strand — beautiful, but sparse.
To create a full, dense pot:
- Take 5–8 cuttings from the same parent plant (or multiple plants of the same variety).
- Prepare all cuttings as above (callus, strip bottom pearls).
- Insert all cuttings into a single pot, distributed evenly around the pot. A 12cm pot can easily accommodate 5–6 cuttings.
- As each cutting roots and grows, it contributes its strand to the overall cascading effect.
- After 3–4 months, you'll have a full, trailing pot that looks like a mature specimen.
Realistic Timeline
- Days 1–5: Callusing and planting. No visible change. This is correct.
- Weeks 1–3: The cutting should look stable. Some slight shriveling of pearls is normal. The stem is developing the beginnings of a root system.
- Weeks 3–5: Tug test should show slight resistance at this stage for fast-growing cuttings in warm conditions. In cooler conditions, this may take 6–8 weeks.
- Weeks 5–8: New pearl growth from the growing tip of the strand is the clearest sign of success. Once the strand is actively growing new pearls, roots are firmly established.
- Months 2–4: The strand lengthens. Begin a normal sparse watering schedule (thorough soak, then complete dry before next water).

String of Pearls Is Worth the Patience
String of pearls has earned its difficult reputation. But the difficulty is not inherent to the plant — it's almost entirely a function of applying the wrong care assumptions (tropical plant watering habits applied to an arid succulent). Once you understand its needs, propagation becomes straightforward.
The rules are simple: extremely dry medium, callused cut end, no watering for the first week, then very sparse misting until roots confirm. Do these things and you'll have success. The plant rewards patience.
